John Halford Waters

John was born and raised on the family farm outside of Pense, SK. In the early years his days included working on the farm, attending school, and enjoying social outings at the town pool hall and curling rink. Dad married Blanche, his high school sweetheart, in the summer of 1955. The following years were spent in Regina as mom obtained her nursing degree, and dad continued his career in sales.

Arriving first was son Greg followed soon after by the birth of Murray. John and Blanche moved to Saskatoon where third son Bob was born. Dad’s work kept him on the road, but he somehow always managed to attend the children’s important school and sports events.

His career in oil and gas sales led to an opportunity with Turbo Resources and the opening of service stations in the Prairies. The next step was a natural progression in owning his first full-service station. Following an early retirement (dad was not one to remain idle) his second career with Radio Cab began. Over the next years dad worked and managed the cab company, along with his infamous Saskatoon traffic reports on CKOM.

Dad’s favourite times included going to the cabin at Emma Lake. It was the centre of summer activity for family and friends, and always included late nights, a bad joke, or pet squirrel. Dad loved the outdoors, as evident in the time and attention he dedicated to having the best lawn on the block.

Following the passing of mom, dad’s health continued to deteriorate although his mind remained sharp. Dad so enjoyed Bob and Carol’s weekend delivery of wonton soup, almost daily phone calls with Murray, numerous conversations with Riley solving the world’s problems, listening to curling on the radio, and watching Jeopardy. Dad’s conversation, advice, and general knowledge about life will be missed.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife and our mom, Blanche. John is survived by sons, GREG (Camille), Riley, Keegan (Crystal), Kaylen (Tim); MURRAY (Sandy), Trevor, Hailey (Jordan), Christian (Lauresa), great-grandchild Ezra; BOB (Carol), Janelle (John), Aaron, Taylor (Aaron), great-grandchildren Kayden, Branden, Lily; as well as brother Ted (Ellen), and sister-in-law Marie (Guy) Lefrancois.

As per dad’s wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers please consider sending a donation in dad’s name to CWL Clothing Depot or St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
