Gerald John Loster

LOSTER, Gerald John, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024. It is with great sadness we share this news of our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Olga, of nearly 59 years. Lovingly remembered by two daughters and two sons, eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. Marilyn (Keith) MacLeod, Mark (Licia) and Donald (Kristen); Gerry (Corinne) Loster, Brody (Stephanie), Chad (Natasha) and Breanna (Mike) Chandler; Tom (Marilyn) Loster, Ryan (Kaylin), Charissa (Landon) and Meaghan (Paul); Kathy (Mike) Noonan, Sarah, Rose and Madeleine; brother Cleo (Georgina); sister Felicia Bennett, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Sophia (Spannier) Loster; siblings Beatrice & Mariquita; brothers Leonard, Eugene, Wayne, Dennis, Lawrence, Rene and D’Arcy.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on June 16, 1927, the third eldest of twelve siblings in total. He moved with his family to Yorkton in 1937 where he completed his schooling. He took his apprenticeship in printing at the Yorkton Enterprise where he worked for a further nine years. He worked one season logging at Campbell River, BC and returned to Yorkton in 1947. His marriage to Olga Rose Molnar on August 13, 1949 was blessed with a family of two girls and two boys. In 1952, he moved his family to Saskatoon where he took employment with Midwest Litho for nearly six years.

From 1958 until early retirement in 1990, he worked at Modern Press/Western Producer as a lithographer (Printer/Compositor/Supervisor). He was a member of the Father O’Leary Council 5104 and later with Holy Spirit Council 8905, Knights of Columbus. He was a Charter Member of the Justice Emmett Hall Assembly #2700, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. In his earlier years, Gerald enjoyed gardening, landscaping, woodworking, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed making many hundreds of Rosaries, donating them to various missions in Canada and Brazil, in addition to repairing many for friends. After retirement, he looked forward to travelling to areas with warmer climates. He shared his love for the outdoors and his family on numerous occasions in SK, AB and BC. enjoying many bus tours, fishing trips with Olga, family and friends.

Gerald made himself available to help his family with any project, regardless of scale and left his mark on the finished work and on those whom he helped.

He was very inquisitive and developed broad knowledge and skill through disciplined self-study and through “doing”. He generously shared his library and his tools with all who would benefit. His sense of community reached far and wide.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2024, at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon) with Father Ken Beck officiating. Rite of Committal will be at the Old Rugged Cross, Hillcrest Memorial Gardens (310 Wess Road, Saskatoon). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, Red Cross or ALS Society of Canada. Arrangements are entrusted to Derryl Hildebrandt.

Following the Mass of Christian Burial, please join the family in the Place of Welcome for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
