Evelyn Katherine Werner

It is with great sadness the family of Evelyn Katherine Werner (nee Bracke) announce her passing on Friday May 31, 2024 at the Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon at the age of 86. Evelyn was born in Watson Saskatchewan on February 15, 1938 to Henry and Emma Bracke. She grew up on a farm near Engelfeld Saskatchewan where she went to school. At the age of 16 she moved to Perdue to work as a nanny. It was here she met her soulmate Ken, purposely going to the post office when she knew he would be there. She was offered a better nanny job in Saskatoon and made the move. Ken moved to Yorkton, so their relationship was long distance. Good thing for the train. Ken proposed, she said yes, and she moved to Yorkton and took a job at the Metropolitan department store. They were married April 27, 1957. Ken’s job took him to Foam Lake, Melville, Filmore, Rosetown, Saskatoon and Martensville. In that time they had four daughters and made many friends.

Evelyn did lots of sewing, making many of her daughters’ clothes, some out of indestructible Fortrel. She was also talented at crocheting, painting, square dancing, curling, cross country skiing, and gardening. Golf was an important activity for her, she loved the socialization and she enjoyed being competitive. They had a trailer at Jackfish Lake and later a trailer at Emma Lake where many family memories were made. Her brother Ed was at Emma Lake as well and between the two there was lots of laughter. Travel was also something she loved to do, especially the cruises. Ev and Ken even flew to Phoenix this last January to visit their daughter, Wendy. Evelyn was an active member of CWL for many years. As the girls got older she took part time jobs at the floral shop, Sears, and the Royal Bank. When Ken retired from RBC, they made the move to West Kelowna BC. She loved the milder weather and didn’t miss those cold prairie winds. She would volunteer at the seniors’ home, crocheting lap blankets and hats, and doing hair for the ladies, and continued to work part time at the Royal Bank.

She loved when the fresh fruit would come into season, freezing, canning, baking up a storm, but also just eating it fresh from the orchard. Evelyn was a very social person, she loved being with friends and family and was a very sharp card player. Anytime she went visiting where there was a chance she would be playing cards, she brought her gold drawstring bag of coins. Usually it left fuller than when she brought it.

In 2022 Ken and Ev moved back to Saskatoon to be closer to family. Evelyn enjoyed spending time at Heather’s place in Blackstrap as it always involved family and food. She also loved to shop, especially at garage sales where it didn’t matter if she didn’t need it, the price was under a dollar and someone was sure to use it. Tammie would join her on these shopping trips and you never knew who would score the best deals. At the manor she liked to play Kaiser, almost always signed up for any road trip that came along and really enjoyed if they put Bailey’s in the coffee on special occasions. They would drive out to Red Deer to visit Joan and take a side trip to Leduc to see Ken’s sister Janice, and her family. Being back in Saskatchewan meant they also got to visit with Ev’s sister Linda more often. Watching her great grandchildren’s activities and being able to spend time with all of them was another advantage of being closer.

In 2016 she was diagnosed with Large B Cell Lymphoma and beat it on two occasions. When it came back for the third time she was unable to battle it and it took her life quite quickly. Evelyn was widely known for her wicked sense of humour and her very contagious laugh. To not be able to share a joke or a tease with her anymore is devastating and heart breaking.

Evelyn is survived by; her husband Ken, her daughters Wendy Wawryk (Eugene), Joan Erlandson (Paul), Tammie Werner, Heather Bradford (Al), grandchildren Dustin (Dani,) Iris (Laurence), James (Tawnya), Amy, Lindsey (Kale) Jay (Brooklyn), Jessica (Austin) and great grandchildren, Hannah, Haley, William, Everleigh, Maddyn, Georgia, Rennen, Isla, Moses and Roman. Also mourning her passing is her sister Linda (Martin), sisters-in-law Janice and Donalda as well as many nieces, nephews and friends made over the years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 8, 2024 at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon.).
