Esther Elizabeth Johnson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was born in Mullingar, SK on July 10, 1938 to Wilhelm and Erna Follack. Esther passed away peacefully in her sleep at Elim Lodge on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at the age of 86.
Esther was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Erna, husband Lewis, sister Annegrete, brothers Wilhelm, Reinhold, and Karl. She leaves behind her children Donna (Joseph), Dale (MaryLynn), Ken (Brenda) and Sharon (Roy) as well as grandchildren Anthony (Kayla), Matthew (Amanda), Gavin (Kirsten), Miranda (Pete), Bryce, Faith (Brayden), Jade (Chris), Sky (Ryan) and Lucas (Carrie) as well as nine Great-Grandchildren Arianna, Emily, Ryker, Ella, Ember, Calder, Paisley, Nash and Indie, sister Lillian and brother David (Valerie).
Esther grew up on the farm in Mullingar in a loving family where she watched her parents work hard to put food on the table. Everyone had chores to do to keep the farm running smoothly. They spent their summers at Meeting Lake, swimming and fishing. Later in life, she enjoyed working at the Sanatorium in The Pas, Manitoba, caring for patients with tuberculosis, and where she met her husband of 51 years, Lewis. They were married in 1960 and moved where Lewis’s work took them. They settled in Saskatoon in 1965 where Esther was a homemaker until their four children were grown. Esther was always sewing, cooking, baking, cleaning and ironing. It was a treat when she would bake bread and let her family enjoy it fresh out of the oven.
She was an amazing grandmother who had the patience of a saint. She always had crafts ready when she knew her grandchildren were coming over. She had tea parties with them, let them create different worlds in the basement and sat on the floor and played with them as often as she could. Everyone enjoyed her garden; whether it was looking at her flowers or enjoying the fruits of her vegetable garden. When her children all moved out, Esther began working at the Luther Care Home as a kitchen worker. She worked early mornings but still had supper ready for Lewis when he got home from work. Esther eventually retired and lovingly cared for Lewis while he battled Parkinson's. Lewis moved into the Luther Care Home (where Esther had worked) and Esther faithfully visited him every day; feeding him lunch and supper and visited with him for hours.
Esther’s love of dogs was very evident. She visited with every dog she ever encountered, so it was not surprising when Buddy the Pomeranian joined the household and then eventually, Max. Esther cared for those pups the same as she did her children…even hand feeding them when she was worried they weren’t eating enough. She loved the Saskatchewan Roughriders, enjoyed attending games, watching on TV and discussing games with whoever was willing to discuss their last game.
Above all, Esther loved her Lord Jesus Christ and lived a life worthy of her beliefs. She was always humble, giving to charities and those less fortunate, prayerful every day, patient, loving, sincere and a servant in every way.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice in Esther’s name would be graciously appreciated.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 11:00 am at Mourning Glory Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive).
