Elsie Bernice Jones (Fillo) passed away on Sunday February 26, 2023 with the same grace and dignity that she lived her life. She was born on September 29, 1932 in Kandahar, SK the 9th of 13 children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Morris Jones; her parents, Andrew and Katherine Fillo; sisters, Irene Brown and Emma Simpson; brothers, Joe, Laddie, Bill, Art, Julius, Clifford and Norman. She is survived by her son, Alan Jones; her daughter Cathy Knoll (David); her grandchildren Matthew Knoll (Megan), Melissa Sedgewick (Dan), Olivia Jones; her great grandson Weston Sedgewick; her sister Darleen Belak (Myron); her brothers Richard (Shirley), and Wesley (Judy) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elsie was born during the depression into a large family where there was lots of love and hard work to go around. This instilled in her very strong family values and a remarkable work ethic that she passed along to her children and grandchildren, which were her greatest pride and joy.
She received her education in Kandahar and worked to help out her large family. She left home at an early age to live in Saskatoon. She worked hard but loved her job at Dowdings Flower Shop. She missed her family and she would travel back home to visit them in Kandahar whenever she could. It was on one of these trips that she met the love of her life Morris Jones. He was the driver of the STC bus and she caught his eye. Morris always said she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen and with much persistence she agreed to a date with him. The rest is history as they married in October 1955. They created a beautiful life together and were blessed with their son Alan in 1957 and their daughter Cathy in 1960. Elsie always put her family and friends first. She loved to cook and bake. Her house was always immaculate inside and out. She also took pride in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens where she spent countless hours. Sadly Morris passed away unexpectedly in 1978 leaving Elsie widowed at age 46. This was a devastating blow to her but she showed immeasurable strength and continued on life’s journey bruised but not broken.
Elsie was also a devoted daughter and spent countless hours helping her parents as they aged. Elsie loved spending time with her grandchildren teaching them how to play cards and board games. She was never too busy for them.
In 2015 Elsie moved from her home where she had lived for almost 60 years into the Bentley. This was a hard transition but she made many friendships with other residents and spent many hours playing cards, building puzzles and doing any and all crafts and activities that they offered. Bingo was her absolute favorite. Mom also enjoyed sports especially baseball and her favorite team was the Toronto Blue Jays. She always wore her team jersey while cheering on their games.
Due to health issues Elsie moved to Samaritan Place in 2018 where she continued to be active till her passing. We would like to thank the staff at Samaritan Place for their excellent care of mom during the time she lived there.
Elsie loved dogs, cats, birds and any other creatures that found their way into her backyard. None of them ever left her yard hungry or thirsty. Therefore in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SCAT (street cat rescue), SPCA or any other animal rescue of your choice. Or, hang a bird feeder in her memory. A private family service will be held.
