Elmer Thomas Henderson of Saskatoon passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital early Saturday morning, November 20, 2021 at the age of 85 years. He was the 5th of 5 children born to Tom and Ruth Henderson. Elmer was born on the farm at Foxdale, SK on September 11, 1936. After his father’s accidental death, Elmer moved with his family to Theodore, SK.
He made his choice to serve the Lord at a young age. His mother worked hard to provide for the family and Elmer would contribute to the family table by hunting. After grade 10 he took a job with Weibe Movers driving truck. At 20 years of age, he joined the City of Saskatoon Fire Department. He worked his way up the ranks to acting Battalion Chief and retired after 33 years later in 1991.
In 1958 Elmer met Valerie a young Registered Nurse. They married August 12, 1961 and raised their family in Saskatoon. Their first son, Mark was born April 17, 1963, and then the second son, Barry on June 6, 1964. Their daughter, Karen joined the family September 30, 1970.
Elmer was a provided, builder and self-taught fixer of all mechanical things. His first business, Stellar Homes and Caraval Homes, constructed 100’s of homes in Saskatoon and area. This included several of their own family homes, cabin at Weyakawin Lake and the hunting lodge near Whitebeech.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Family meals at home were from wild game, moose, elk, deer, duck, geese, and grouse. This hunting passion lead into another business after his retirement from the Fire Department. Thunder Hills Outfitters guides for big game in Northern Saskatchewan as well as the Porcupine Hills. Many clients and friends were made at the hunting lodge.
Elmer loved planting a garden. It was a way to compliment the moose roast on the table. This nurturing of the land helped in starting the farming portion of Thunder Meadow Farms. Elmer and his sons worked together for many years planting and harvesting wheat and canola. He envisioned a legacy for his family to enjoy the land.
As Elmer’s health began to fail and the dementia set in, the family arranged for care at his home in Saskatoon. His love for God gave him refuge in prayer even during this darker period in his life. The final move was to Stonebridge Crossing with personal care aides at his side. Thanks to Geraldine, Evelyn, Lois, and Jenna for the care and visits.
Elmer was predeceased by his loving wife, both parents, his sisters and grandson Ryan Henderson.
He leaves to cherish his memory of his children, Mark and Linda (Lull) Henderson of Casa Rio, Barry and Dorry (Poitras) Henderson of Norquay, and Karen Henderson of Saskatoon; one grandson Logan and Jalena (Fair) Henderson of Saskatoon, and 4 granddaughters Shayla (Cornea) and Nile Bijoux of Auckland, New Zealand, Rachael Henderson of Airdrie, AB, Kaitie Cornea of Saskatoon, and Brittany Henderson of Norquay, SK, step grandchildren Shannon (Rob) Schellenberg, Sam Haley, Austin and Chelsey (Keith) Kuspira as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
