Jo was born August 14, 1930 on the family farm in Oakley Woods, Oxfordshire, England, the third of four children. She told many stories of growing up during the war and how this taught her the value of hard work and fitness. She walked or biked 3 miles to school and back, was captain of the field hockey and tennis team and competed in cross country running and track.
Upon school graduation, she was offered a spot on the national women's field hockey team, but instead chose to train at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and become a nurse. During this time, her brother, who was in the RAF would take her up in a Tiger Moth and try to make her scream by doing aerobatics, but he never succeeded. When she turned 90, she went up again in the Tiger Moth in Saskatoon, making the National News.
Jo continued her training to become a midwife in London. A year later, seeking adventure, she took a ship to Canada to work as a nurse at Saskatoon City hospital. In the summer of 1955, she met the love of her life and partner until his death (1999), Wayne Reed. They were married in England about 6 weeks after they met and went on to raise 4 children.
They lived in Welwyn, Plenty and Kindersley where Wayne worked as principal and Director of Education. They moved to Saskatoon when Wayne retired in 1980. She went back to her nursing career once all the children were in school, retiring from St. Pauls' emergency department at the age of 60.
Always a woman of adventure, Jo continued to enjoy activities such as tennis, water-skiing, down-hill skiing, golfing, hiking and gardening. Most summers were spent at the cabin at Chitek Lake. She was an avid traveler visiting many countries over the years, where she wasn't afraid to try new things such as zip-lining, parasailing and balloon rides. Jo was also a talented seamstress and baker, not to mention a fun and interactive grandma!
Jo was predeceased by her husband Wayne, her daughter Rana and her three siblings John, Katie and Noel. She is survived by her children: Creigh (Natalie) Reed, Darian (Hilda) Reed, Liris (Luke) Smith, her son-in-law Brett Meinert, and her grandchildren Barclay, Calista, Danatay, Steve, Maegan, Amber, Ben, Matt, Tessa, Christie, Mack, Chandler, Jenny, Clint and Dustin, a growing number of great-grandchildren, and large group of extended family and friends.
She faced her final days with the same sense of adventure, humor and dignity that defined her life. She will be missed by many.
A private family service will occur at a later date.
