On December 15, at 12:20 a.m., I lost my best friend and the love of my life, my husband Alex. Over the last sixteen months he had been going through treatments for cancer, and I was by his side holding his hand every day, including the moment when his journey ended.
Not only was he a fantastic husband, he was also a father to Samantha (Andrew), Chris (Susan), and Keith. Then came along his nine grandchildren that he was so proud of - Brendan (Shawna), Ty, Malaki, Salem, Cartel, Armani, Diamond, Lauchaln, and Jordann. Alex loved going to watch the grandchildren play hockey, ball, soccer and roller derby.
Alex was predeceased by his parents Bob and Peggie Hosie, and his sister Pat. He is survived by his sisters Sueann and Lynn.
Alex grew up and lived around Saskatoon most of his life, although we did move to Richmond BC for 6 months. He loved it there, but I missed all my family here so we moved back, as Alex always wanted to make me happy. He worked at Marquis Downs for many years and was the starter on the gate. We owned a hotel in Wieston SK for awhile and then he worked for my brother Eddie for a few years at Econo Septic. He tried retiring at 65 but that didn’t last long as he became bored so he started working for Part Source as a driver up until two days before his surgery.
Some of the things that he enjoyed doing was going fishing at Clam Lake with his best friend, Tom Little. Alex said Tom is the brother he never had, they grew up together and experienced a lot of adventures, that I probably should not post here. This past summer Tom took Alex to Clam Lake for his last time, and that meant so much to Alex that he had a chance to go there again.
We did do some traveling to Mexico - he loved Mazatlan and we were fortunate enough to have taken a couple of trips with our son Chris and Susan and their kids. Other times we went with Bill and Maureen Hay, as they were the ones that put the bug in us to go to Mazatlan.
Alex had a great sense of humor - he liked to play jokes on people, especially the grandkids, as well as some friends.
We loved to dance on the deck in the summer. Our kids and friends would stop by and come around the corner and there they would find us dancing. The last while, even when Alex wasn’t very mobile, when I would help him up he would put his arms around my neck and just give his body a wiggle and say " well babe, we just had a dance."
He will be truly missed by so many, the hearts that he touched is incredible. So many people that I have spoken to in the last couple of days would say how they loved the twinkle in his eyes when he smiled. To me, he always had a twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes.
"I love you more. I wish I could come to you but unfortunately you have to come to me for a couple days anyway looking forward to seeing you as soon as possible you are my sunshine you shine bright in my eyes my love for you will never die only get stronger every day. Sounds corny coming from me by I mean it. Hugs loves and kisses." This was one of the last texts I got from Alex.
Alex babe, I will come to you when my time is done here on earth. Until then, I will make sure our family and friends know how much you meant to them. And I will continue to live life how we always lived. With love, laughter, and happiness.
I was so blessed to have had him in my life for 36 years. Not only was he a wonderful man, he was an amazing husband, dad, step-dad, and pa. I miss him so much.
I would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff and St. Paul's palliative care, and at the Cancer Clinic. We really appreciated the help and kindness we received.
A gathering will take place at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to Travis Minor.
