I just learned of Rick's passing from a friend at TVA.  I knew Rick in the General Counsel's Office and worked with him for many years in the Inspector General's office.  He was as good an attorney as I ever encountered, was a terrific coworker, and someone whose judgment and integrity I always valued.  He made my work-life a better place and I am saddened by his passing.  I'm sure he made a real contribution wherever he found himself.  Wherever he was, he made it a better place.

So sorry to hear (belatedly) about Rick.  I worked with Rick as an attorney with TVA.  While in OGC or the IG's Office, he provided wise counsel to all.  Rick was very well regarded and he was my friend.  Godspeed, Rick, and sincere condolences to his loving family.

I am truly sorry to hear of Rick's passing.  I had the privilege of working with Rick for many years at the TVA Office of Inspector General.  He was always such a gentleman and positive influence in the workplace.  I know his death will leave a great void but I pray your memories will be of comfort. 

 Rick was an incredibly productive genius who contributed a huge amount to all of us through his work. More important to me was his devotion to his family and by extension to our whole family. For 47 years he and my sister Cathy were amazing partners and parents. He was loved and appreciated by all of us, and he added so much to our entire family. Among many other gifts he brought to us is his decade-long support for our Mother during her long struggle with a debilitating illness. To me Rick had all the right priorities and the competence to pull it all off. I will miss him terribly, every encounter I had with him made my life a little better.

Richard Levi or Mr. Levi as I always called was one of the most patient people I had ever met. When I met him kevin and I were at that young adulthood stage and weren't always making the best choices. He would always be so calm when he would advise me not to do the next dumb thing I was planning. As a father of three boys I have definitely learned a lesson or two from his calm and sweet demeanor. I wish I had gotten to know him better. To the whole Levi family I'm so sorry for your loss and you all will be in my thoughts.

I’m sad that I only met Rick towards the end of his journey, but I will always remember his playful sense of humor and his fierce Parcheesi moves. I’m sorry for the loss of such a lovely person. 


Much of my adolescence and young adulthood was spent in the Levi basement. The entire Levi family was kind, supportive, and welcoming to me. I will always fondly remember time at that house. The safe havens of our youth become instructions on respect and generosity. Thank you for always making me feel safe and welcomed. 

I’ve listened for these last years of the struggle Mr. Levi, and all of you,  have faced. Even without face to face, or words exchanged, you all have been in my heart through this entire journey. I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I pray for comfort for each of you. Safe passage to you and prayers forever for your family. 

My dad was a wonderful father. As I have grown, I have come to realize that not only was he a wonderful father, but he was also one of the most incredible people that I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know. His memory will be carried with me always and I hope to emulate his character throughout my life. Love you dad.

I first met Rick and his family when I was in high school in 1999. As a friend of his son Kevin, I spent much time at their house in Knoxville, TN. They had a beautiful, peaceful, and loving home. Rick was always jovial and easy going. He could always put a smile on your face. I'm glad I got to spend time with him again recently when he came out to Oregon.  I mourn with the Levi family on the loss of a truly wonderful human being.  

I was Rick’s Hospice volunteer & developed a great admiration for him. I felt his inner strength & kindness in each visit. He taught me the love of reading poetry & he displayed kind patience while sitting  through my readings of Louis L’Amour’s western stories. I always asked Rick if he enjoyed each story we read together & he always gave me a “thumbs up”. He never wanted to deflate my ego or disappoint. I will always treasure my time spent with Rick & know he has found peace in the glorious  heavenly realm.

This is how I remember Rick on one of our many hikes

Rick was a good man. A man of substance, though sometimes one of few words. Rick was a person to respect because he earned it. I had the privilege of spending nearly a decade of holidays and weekends getting to know Rick. In this time, I had the opportunity to learn from him. He spent hours helping me understand organizational metrics. Between our conversations on politics and local events, I had the chance to learn his style of making moves on a game board. Really, in these years, Rick helped me become more comfortable with my own “style” of maneuvering in the world, as sometimes there was laughter in the Levi home about how we were alike – down to sitting slumped over on a bench the same way. 

It didn’t matter the situation or activity – Rick, Cathy, Kevin and Cory would fill a room with chatter, and so much laughter. At times, this joy could be intimidating as I hadn’t experienced such familial love at that time in my life. In time, I came to know that Rick and Cathy’s acceptance of the many friends to whom Kevin and Cory would introduce to them was at the heart of every gathering.

Cathy, Kevin, and Cory: I’m sorry for your loss. While the world has lost such a precious man, I’m certain that Richard “Rick” Levi will not be forgotten. Thinking of you.

We are deeply sorry for your loss. Susan and Mike always spoke of Rick as a trail blazer and an inspiration to his family, friends and co-workers. May his memory be a blessing. Wishing you only sweet memories and much peace. 


I worked with Rick at TVA for a number of years and he was truly one on the nicest individuals I have every met.   Rick you will be missed but you will never be forgotten. 

I'm sorry to hear this news of Rick's passing and offer my sympathies to the family.  Rick was my supervisor when I first started as an attorney at the TVA OIG.  He is still the sharpest attorney I've ever met but he was more than smart - he was a tremendous teacher, provided wisdom in his advice, and was full of kindness.  I'll always be aware of his positive influence on me.

To me, Rick was my friend Corwin’s dad-even as an adult I thought of him that way, since I met Corwin when I was just a college sophomore. Rick and Cathy opened their home to me when I was interviewing for a job in D.C. At the time I was questioning my career path in life, and one morning Rick just sat me down in the family room and talked me through some of my worries. It meant the world to me. I also remember the pride he felt for Corwin. Although he bemoaned that Corwin was no longer a lawyer (Rick said: “such a shame-he was so good at it, too!”) he was so, so proud of Corwin’s achievements as an artist. In fact, at the time, I was writing a story about Corwin’s life as an artist. In response, Rick and Cathy brought out all this wonderful art from Corwin’s preschool and elementary school years and spread it all around a big dining room table. Oh, the love in Rick’s eyes. Finally, I recall Rick reassuring me that a life of service as a government attorney would be fulfilling. I know it was for him, and in a way my life as a lawyer started there, in the family room of Corwin’s house with his dad Rick. 

I'm so grateful that I was able to spend last Christmas with Rick, Cathy, and Corwin in Sarasota. Rick never lost his mischievous sense of humor or the twinkle in his eye, even in the toughest moments. He will be missed. Cathy, Kevin, and Corwin—I'm thinking of you and sending you lots of love.
