Born in Rochester New York to Steven G. and Harriet Riley on July 18, 1939. He and Carole moved to Florida to enjoy the sunny days and play golf. John graduated from Monroe Community College with a degree in precision machining and was employed by General Motors in the Tool & Die Division (Rochester Products). He was also self-employed in the container shipping business and was later an adjunct Golf Instructor at SUNY Brockport, State University.
John was known by all who knew him as a fun loving free spirit, who never met a stranger. John and golf were synonymous. He thoroughly enjoyed everything about it; playing, teaching, watching, talking and certainly all the socialization that came with the game.
John is survived by his wife Carole M. Riley, son Timothy John (Molly) of Virginia Beach, Julie Elizabeth Riley Melvin (Michael) of Manassas Virginia, brother Steven G. Riley Jr., sisters Rosemary (Pat) Noce and SSJ Elizabeth (Betty) Riley, step daughter Deborah LaVigne (Gerald), Timothy Springer (Jacklyn), 6 grandchildren, (Lindsay, Brendan, Mitchell, Jeremy, Katherine, Kimberly) 7 step-grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and two beloved Labs (Keri & Mia).
A summertime funeral with internment will be conducted at White Haven Memorial Park Pittsford NY.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, loyal staff and members of the Palm Aire Country Club, his friend Jose, who provided outstanding care, compassion and dignity to John, the incredibly skilled nurses of Tidewell Hospice and John’s countless friends who helped through this difficult journey. The Riley family is also encouraging men to regularly seek prostate & PSA exams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be offered to the Sarasota SPCA.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmsrobartsfuneralhome.com for the Riley family.
