Edward K Trowbridge of Sarasota, Florida and Long Beach Island, NJ, passed away on Sunday, April 27, at Bay Village of Sarasota. He was 85. He is survived by a son, Edward K.Jr, daughter Lynn T Kresge, grandson Andrew T, son-in-law William, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Marie Cassidy Trowbridge, son Glenn, and sister, Elaine McHugh.
Born in 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to Cecil and Lillian Biester Trowbridge, he attended John Bartram High School and enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in Alaska and assigned as a ski trooper during the Korean conflict.
In 1950 he married Marie Veronica Cassidy. They had three children.
He graduated with honors from University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business.
He began his business career with William H McGee & Co. before moving to Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company. He spent the remainder of his career with the Atlantic Companies before his retirement in 1993, as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Following his retirement he was elected to the Board of Directors of International Shipholding Corporation, which proudly includes among its subsidiaries Waterman Steamship Company and Central Gulf Lines, Inc.
During his career he served as Chairman of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters and held various positions in many other organizations including the International Union of Marine Insurance, American Hull Insurance Syndicate, National Cargo Bureau, American Bureau of Shipping, Cargo Reinsurance Association, American Cargo War Risk Reinsurance Exchange and Water Quality Insurance Syndicate. He also held positions with the Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America, The Conference Board and the Board of Morristown Memorial Hospital. His involvement with these various organizations afforded he and Marie the opportunity to travel to many countries around the world.
He was a former member of Spring Brook Country Club, Morristown, NJ and most recently Sarasota Yacht Club and the Meadows Country Club in Sarasota. He enjoyed boating, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends and especially, his grandson Andrew. He loved dogs and had many during his lifetime, including his most recent, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Misty, who was adopted when he was no longer able to care for her.
A joint memorial service will be planned for Edward and his wife, Marie; the date and time of the service will be announced at a later date.
