Dr. Edith Schwartz (nee Richmond) was born December 31, 1931 in pre-Nazi Germany, the daughter of Else and Leo. In 1940, Edith fled Germany with her mother and sister, Judith, to the United States, joining her father in New York. Always a strong student, Edith was a trailblazer, graduating with the first class of women from the Bronx High School of Science. Upon graduation, Edith matriculated at Barnard College of Columbia University, eventually earning a Ph.D in biochemistry from Cornell University. Edith had a long and varied career as a biochemist, working in academia, industry, and government. Edith married Warren Schwartz (now deceased) and they had three children. Following a divorce from Warren, Edith would later marry Juan (“John”) Bellantoni. Edith is survived by her husband, her three children, Lisa Pomerantz (Lance), Madeline Pomerantz (Evan), and Edward Schwartz (Meredith), and her grandchildren, Jeremy Pomerantz, Lionel Pomerantz (Claire), Abigail Goodman-Schwartz (Joseph), and Louis Schwartz. Edith will also be remembered by her four stepchildren, Leo, John, Steven and Janet, their spouses and children.
Edith will be dearly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in Edith's memory to a Jewish, medical, or scientific research charity of your choice.
There will be a graveside service and burial at 10 AM this Sunday, November 5, 2023. The service will be held at the Temple Beth Shalom Cemetery, located at 801 Circus Blvd in Sarasota (https://templebethsholomfl.org/Cemetery).
