Charles Guthrie Balch, 83, died peacefully on August 24th at Life Care Center of Sarasota, Florida.
He was born in Indianapolis, IN, the 2nd son of Dr. James Ferguson Balch and Margaret Guthrie Balch. He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1953, Indiana University in Bloomington, IN in 1957, as an Insurance Major with a B.S. in Business. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He was associated with Massachusetts Life Insurance Co., Equitable Life Insurance Co., Insurance Co. of North America as Claims Adjuster and Manager for State of Indiana. He was Vice President of Indianapolis Paving Corporation.
In West Palm Beach, FL. he was a Private Legal Investigator for the law firm of Cone, Wagner, Neugent and Balch Investigative Services for 24 years.
He was an exceptional golfer (making Ripley’s Believe It or Not at age 15), handball, racquetball player and jogging enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sara Jean Sparks of Muncie, IN, daughter Susan Marie (Mrs. Richard Ellis) of Sarasota, FL., and Sandra Ann Balch of Austin, TX; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Gordon Ellis, Christopher Charles Ellis, and Sara Catherine Ellis.
Additional survivors are his sister Debra Sue Balch and brother Dr. James Ferguson Balch II. He was proceeded in death by his parents, step-mother Dorothy Ellis Balch, and brother David R. Balch.
A Memorial Mass will celebrated by Fr. Matthew Grady at Incarnation Catholic Church Sarasota, FL on September 8th at 11 AM. Graveside Services will be celebrated at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Service time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice or Incarnation School 2911 Bee Ridge Rd., Sarasota 34239, St. Vincent de Paul Society or Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607.
