He was a graduate of and Senior Class President for Culter (Christian) Academy in Los Angeles, now Linfield Christian School (Temecula, CA). From there he went on the complete his bachelor’s degree at UCLA and later a Master of Science in Education from USC. He joined the ROTC in college (at UCLA) and eventually attained the rank of Full Colonel in the United States Air Force. He served in the USAF on Active Duty from Oct. 1954-Oct. 1957. He also served for many years in the USAF Reserves and was an Admissions Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in the 1980s.
He also taught for many years in the Redondo/Mira Costa School District at the high school level, until his retirement at the age of 67. His passions were restoring old cars, electronics, mathematics, and studying the Bible. He was a passionate and devoted Christian, having committed himself to the Lord at the age of 12.
He deeply loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He helped raise not only his daughter (Dr. Verna R. Porter-Buxton), but his three wonderful grandsons (Will, John and Andrew Buxton) of whom he was so proud.
Although he struggled during his final years with dementia, he remained close to his family, living next door to them until his passing. We all have fond and lasting memories of Grandpa and some of his crazy antics and passions, and we will all remember him fondly, resting in the assurance that he is now in Heaven, surrounded by everlasting love and peace that transcends all understanding.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dr. Donna L. Vredevoe Porter (whom he married in 1962), his parents (Edgar Allen Porter and Ruth Emma Russell-Porter), and his brother (Robert Porter).
