Frank Leonard Fontana passed away peacefully August 24, 2013 in Eugene, Oregon. He was 90 years old. Frank was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1923 to Leo and Anna Fontana. They moved the family to San Jose, California when Frank was 6 months old. Growing up in San Jose with his four sisters and brother, Frank helped his father in the local orchards and in his late teens worked as a shipbuilder in San Francisco. Frank served in the Army Air Corp during WW II. He was stationed in the Asian Pacific Theater. Frank also assisted his fellow veterans, by supporting the efforts in building the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C. After serving his country, Frank held various jobs before beginning his career of over 40 years with the Nabisco Company. Frank was a proud member of the Teamsters, and was awarded by the California Highway Patrol for his excellent driving safety record. After meeting the love of his life, Marie, they married in 1949, beginning a journey together that would last over 55 years. As a couple they worked hard together to give their family a good life. It was very common for family and friends to gather at "Marie and Franks" for great food and fun on the weekends. Frank loved to garden and bowl. He also enjoyed singing and dancing with his many friends. He raced competitive pigeons, winning many competitions. His birds were included in the opening ceremonies of the Squaw Valley Olympics. He was also a devoted fan of the S.F. Giants and 49ers. Frank will be dearly missed by his two children Roseann (Jim) and Frank (Martha). "Papa" will also be fondly remembered by his four cherished grandchildren, Richard, Matthew, Vanessa and Scott.
