Bruce Myers departed this life at the age of 71 in Sunnyvale, California on October 25, 2021. He had suffered through an extended battle with Alzheimer’s and Cancer. Bruce was born in Panguitch, Utah on November 14, 1949, to parents Jean & Champ Myers. He spent most of his childhood years moving every three months while his dad mapped the Western United States for the US Geological Survey.
In his freshman year of high school, he finally found a hometown in Santa Clara. He went to Buchser High School and graduated in 1967. While there he made a name for himself in water polo and swimming. He carried on his achievements at West Valley College where he was awarded “All American” for college water polo and was an alternate for the Pan Am Games. He continued a successful water polo career at California State University at Chico and earned his BA Degree and teaching credential.
In 1968 he met his future wife, Sandy Allen at West Valley College. They married in 1971 and made their first home in Chico while finishing their education goals and giving birth to their first son. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and many extended relatives and friends. Bruce’s greatest joys in life were his family, friends, and fishing, he was especially happy when he could combine all of those.
Bruce worked for the City of Santa Clara most of his adult life. It was his “summer job” all through college and became his chosen career. He spent 32 years there and retired as the Assistant Sewer Superintendent. He loved Santa Clara and his job. Many times, he would return to citizen homes after work to volunteer to help them with problems not covered by City of Santa Clara services.
Retirement did not change that commitment to citizens, neighbors, family, and friends. He was the “go to guy” to get advice, free expertise, and labor. People really appreciated his help, but in fact, he was happy that he was able to be there and do what he could.
During his retirement he & Sandy remodeled parts of their house, traveled with their family to Alaska, which he called the trip of a lifetime, cruised to the Mediterranean and traveled around the United States. He also spent as much time as possible fishing, whether it be at his cabin or on his boat in the ocean. It’s where he said he found heaven.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Myers; his sons and their spouses, Heath Myers (Monica) and Cliff Myers (Kelly); his grandchildren, Jacob Myers, Alexandria Myers, Anthony Myers, Justin Myers, and Hayden Myers; his sister, Sharon Myers; his nephews & nieces, Roger Allen (Jill); Soncerae Allen; Cindy Allen; Kellie Holt (Daniel); Erica Egleston; Michael Horton; Joseph Mandel (Wendy); Eric Ellis (Amy); Gina Ellis (Adam); Kelly Witham(Josh); Mollye Friedman (Darren); and Noah Friedman (Kate), and many grand and great grandnephews & nieces. He is predeceased by his parents and grandparents.
Family and friends aren’t just important things. They are everything.
