Edith was born in St. Johns Township in Bertie County, North Carolina. She was one of eight siblings born to the late James Abner Cofield and Mary Sue Rawls Cofield. Edith was predeceased by her son, Samuel, and her husband of 69 years, James Clifford Palmer.
Edith is survived by her sister, Merle Groves, daughter, Dianna Christine Smith, grandchildren Danny Palmer, David Palmer (Cheri), Masaya Palmer Urba (Brad), Jimmy Palmer, Sarah Palmer, and Derek Smith (Alicia); great grandchildren Andrew Palmer, Ava Palmer, Liam Palmer, Derek Smith Jr., and Madison Smith.
In Edith’s early childhood the family moved from North Carolina to Virginia where she spent her growing up years. Edith met her husband Clifford when his ship was in Norfolk, Virginia for repairs during World War II. They fell in love, married and moved to California where they began their new life and raised their family. They had two children, Samuel and Christine. Edith was a stay-at-home mother and was very involved in helping at their schools and working to set up the library. Edith also devoted her time for over 40 years working as a poll judge for the election polls in the City of Orange. She remained close to her parents and brothers and sisters in Virginia, Texas and Florida traveling to visit about once a year.
Edith was instrumental in helping her grandchildren whom she loved dearly throughout their lives. She was hardworking and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
