Alberto Manetta, M.D., age 78, of Irvine, California passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2022. There will be a Funeral Service held at Fairhaven Memorial Park on January, 15th 2023 at 11am in the Waverley Chapel.
Dr. Alberto Manetta was a leading gynecologic oncologist and a former Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs at UCI Medical School, as well as a professor at the University of California, Irvine. He was also ardently devoted to his family, a fiercely loyal friend and true champion of the underserved.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Manetta came to the United States in 1968 to pursue a career in medicine. As a resident in New York's Nassau Hospital (now NYU Winthrop University Hospital in Long Island), he met Nancy Mosard. The couple were married in 1971.
Dr. Manetta and Nancy moved to rural Pennsylvania where their children Edward (50) and Kathryn (49) were born. Dr. Manetta practiced as a small-town Ob-Gyn for ten years before accepting a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1982.
Dr. Manetta's career in academia began following his graduation from Georgetown in 1984 when he was accepted as a faculty member at the Gynecologic Division, OB Gynecology department of Pennsylvania State University.
In 1988, Dr. Manetta accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California, Irvine.
In 1992, Dr. Manetta was appointed Associate Dean of Medical Education at UCI. A year later, he was named Senior Associate Dean of Educational Affairs at UCI, a position he held until his retirement in 2007.
Dr. Manetta's career spanned over five decades, extending from coast to coast and across international borders, including South America and the Middle East.
As a physician, he developed innovative methods for early detection of cervical cancers among high-risk groups.
In his 10 years of service as Senior Associate Dean, he oversaw the education of physicians as well as health and nursing professionals at UCI Medical Center.
Dr. Manetta was also the creator, Founder, and Director of the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC), which prepared physicians and public health experts to meet the many health care needs of the Latino community.
Dr. Manetta also advocated for the well-being of Orange County’s Latino population as chair of the board of Latino Health Access.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Manetta authored or co-authored over 110 publications in peer review, journals and books.
Throughout his career and in his retirement, Dr. Manetta (or "Al") was wholly committed to his family and friends. Vacations were always spent traveling around the world with his wife and children, and later his extended families and grandchildren.
Al had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and strong desire to please those around him. His curiosity and drive led him to excel in many areas outside of medicine, including woodworking, where he earned local recognition as an artistic woodturner. His interests in mentalism and illusions earned him admission to the Academy of Magical Arts and the prestigious Magic Castle Club in Los Angeles, California. His annual Halloween parties and turns as Santa Claus were also neighborhood staples.
Dr. Alberto Manetta is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Manetta, his son Edward Manetta, and his daughter Dr. Kathryn Manetta, as well as his two grandchildren Emily Manetta and Vincent Alberto Oportot.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.fairhavenmemorial.com for the Manetta family.
