went to high school together, and had great conversations before her enlistment. She checked up on me while I was enlisted, and while she was in training in NC, I offered to help with anything she needed since she was fresh out of boot camp.. beautiful spirit and such a tragedy. rest in peace, till Valhalla

Sgt Hernandez was my drill instructor in boot camp. She was the absolute best. She strived to teach us the values of real honor, courage, and commitment. She was the best goddamn drill instructor ever. No one can convince me otherwise. I will never forget her ever.

I don’t know you but I felt the love you showed to everyone in all these photos. A good soul will never be forgotten. You’ve warmed so many and transformed so many people, in my eyes they’ll never forget the strength and power you’ve instilled in them. Godbless your courage, your light even your energy for always seeing something amazing in others. A warm soul like yours will never be forgotten. May you reach the heavens with open arms. I had the pleasure of knowing of Yliana through my son, Efren Sarmiento. She was a very close friend of his, and at times he would call with her present or send videos of them both at the pool laughing. Her smile was infectious and her energy beaming. I met her at the DI graduation and took this photo of her and my son together. She will forever be remembered and thought of all the way in El Paso, TX. I pray that her light forever shine upon all of her loved ones always.

Yliana and chris were two peas in a pod. They often helped each other through the tough times in life but the memory I will never forget is the night yliana came out to Rosie’s with Chris and I. She was tiirreeddd  and fighting for her life to stay awake. Everyone there was clowning on her for being thick. After the night was over we headed home for the night and Chris got pulled over. Without hesitation Yli was willing to take one for the team and pretend she was sick. Right on cue as the police is interrogating Chris about if she had been drinking (she told the truth and said she had lol, believe me I was baffled as to why she would do that too) Yli starts pretending to gag and be sick in the back. The cop looks at her concerned (mind you she was in cycle so she already looked sickly) & he decided to let Chris off with a verbal warning.  After the cop left Yliana proceeded to act like her normal self. She was an actress that night, the star of the show lol.

We didn't take many photos together, so I can't hold her in my memory that way. But the one thing I do have, the one thing that tied us together... is the banana bread she loved so much. I made it for the first time a long time ago. And she became obsessed with  it. So much so, that her love for it became the reason I even continued to make it. 
Every time I made some, I ensured she got the biggest piece. Or a whole loaf, if I could. To be shared at her discretion. And if anyone deprived her of her banana bread, they would have to answer to me. 
Her "banana bread goddess" she called me. 
So, here it is. The recipe that became our bond. I hope you make it, and love it just as much as we did.

BREAD
1 large egg
¼ cup light brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup butter softened
¼ cup sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 bananas (if they aren't super ripe, you can add a little more sugar)
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
CREAM CHEESE FILLING
1 large egg
4 oz cream cheese, softened
¼ cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

DIRECTIONS
1-In a large bowl, mix the egg, sugars, butter, sour cream, and vanilla. This is a messy process. If you think your bowl is large enough, it isn't. Get a bigger bowl. You're welcome.
2-Add the bananas, mash into the mixture. I use a potato masher for this.
3-Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and mix. Set aside.
4-In another large bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, flour, and egg. This one can can be a regular large bowl.
5-Pour half of the bread batter into a greased or sprayed 9x5 inch pan. 
6-Pour the cream cheese filling, smooth into corners, top with remaining batter. I find a chopstick works well for this.
7-Bake at 350°F  for about 50 mins. Baking times may vary, so keep an eye on the bread. Poke with a chopstick. If it comes back clean, your bread is done.
8-Allow to cool for 15 mins.
For some razzle dazzle, add some caramelized bananas or chocolate chips.
