Susan Marie Mackenzie of Alpharetta, GA passed away on November 24, 2011 after a brief but intense illness. She was born to Edith Stewart Hooker and Walter Brandt Mackenzie on February 10, 1949 in Oceanside, L.I. NY. Susan became a resident of Fulton County in February 1960 when her family moved from Long Island to Sandy Springs, GA. She was a 1967 graduate of North Springs High School and a 1971 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College of Hickory, NC where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. Susan taught second grade classes in the former Roswell Elementary School in Roswell, GA from 1971 to 1978 when she left to become office manager of the local sales office of a national food processing company. In 1983 she joined the staff of the pension department of Cox Enterprises, Inc. where she served in several managerial positions. She was manager of Savings Plus, a Cox employee benefit plan when she retired in 2004. In December 1986, Susan married Bradley J. Williams of Woodstock, GA; shortly thereafter the couple purchased the present family home in Alpharetta. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on December 28, 2011. From the time of their births, Susan had a great love for, and interest in, her younger sister Janet’s two daughters, Lauren and Meredith who reciprocated her love and called her “our other mother.” At an early age, Susan developed a fondness for pets of every kind: white mice, gerbils, parakeets, turtles and dogs. As an adult, her love for animals continued and she regularly adopted stray dogs and cats; there were always two or more of them in her home. Susan was beautiful, intelligent, loveable, caring, thoughtful, and always considerate of others. She was admired, respected and loved by all who knew her. Susan was predeceased by her mother, Edith Hooker Mackenzie, and is survived by her loving husband Bradley J. Williams; her father Walter B. Mackenzie and his dearly loved second wife, Norma Ragla Mackenzie of Atlanta; sisters: Nancy M. Perryman of Highpoint, NC; Janet M. (Spiff) Carner of Acworth, GA; Deborah Ragla (Steve) Necessary of Alpharetta, GA; and brother David W. (Linda) Mackenzie of Bainbridge Island, WA; nieces Lauren (Brice) Dalrymple of Marietta, GA; Meredith Taylor of Acworth, GA; Jennifer Mackenzie of Columbia, SC; Carolyn (Daniel) Hecken of Schwennigen Germany; Kristine (Matt) Loveless of Atlanta; and Courtney and Abbie Necessary of Nashville, TN; and nephews: Robert (Mandy) Mackenzie of Mobile, AL; Brian (Marcie) Perryman of Glen Allen, VA; and Adam (Holly) Perryman of High Point, NC; and four great nieces and one great nephew. The funeral service will be held at Sandy Springs Chapel on Monday, November 28, 2011, with Pastor David Hardy of Living Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Interment at Arlington Memorial Park will follow. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday with viewing hours from 9:00 a.m. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you might consider a memorial gift to the animal rescue organization of your choosing.
