Steve was born in Sheboygan, WI as the middle child of Claude and Betty Best. His formative years were spent in High Point, NC and Sterling, VA. He is a 1971 graduate of Broad Run High School, graduate of Emory and Henry College (BA), Randolph Technical College (AS) and Georgia State University (MBA). His professional life was spent working as a commercial/ fashion photographer and photography director for various retail advertising firms in Chattanooga, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Steve had served on the Board of Directors of Professional Photographers of America including a tenure as Board Chairman as well as Executive Director of American Photographic Artists. At the time of his passing he was employed with KEH Cameras in Atlanta, GA.
Steve loved doing yoga with his family and watching cooking and home shows and his beloved Washington football team.
There are so many glowing adjectives that could be used to describe Steve...loving, gentle, kind, compassionate, humble, nurturing, smart, funny, talented and all are absolutely true. But the words that come most often to mind for me, his wife of 42 years, are peaceful and gracious. Steve was at peace with himself, with life as it unfolded and with his place in the world. He was peaceful in his words and actions. He lived his life with a sense of grace, poise and kindness that was always on display in every situation and towards every person. Steve was quiet, strong and steady and provided an indestructible foundation for his family to build their lives upon.
Steve is survived by his wife Tommie, son Nick and daughter Madison and his loyal dog Heidi. With him during his transition were his beloved brother, Tom Best and wife Marge Cawley and sister, Claudia Bray and husband Jeff. His nieces and nephews held him in their hearts and prayers from distant states: Joshua Anamier (Colorado), Cheri Brown (North Carolina) and Tera Donegan (Arizona).
The void Steve’s loss leaves in our lives will never be filled, but the love he gave us will carry us through. A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming months.
