Robert Head McAfee Baker, 92, of Sandy Springs, died April 30, 2011. Mr. Baker was born in Atlanta, GA on November 24, 1918 and was the son of Robert Head McAfee and Marie Smith McAfee Baker. He attended Tech High School, Emory University and Georgia State University. Mr. Baker served during World War II in The U.S. Army Air Corps as a Staff Sargent in the 5th Squadron 49th Fighter Group. Mr. Baker worked in the trucking industry since 1938 and was the owner of Metropolitan Express Company. Along with his wife Hazel, Mr. Baker was very active in the Sandy Springs community. Their involvements include: Capital View United Methodist Church where he was in the choir and served as a youth leader; Sandy Springs United Methodist Church where he was a Scout Master with Troop #436, chair of the Finance Committee, a Lay Leader, and a Sunday School teacher; Fulton County Housing Authority Chairman; President of the Music Association at Ridgeview High School; Council President of North Fulton County PTA. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his son, Edmund Matthew Baker and is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hazel Chandler Chapman Baker; children, Robert Head Baker, Jr. (Sara Miles Baker), Maria Angeliate Baker-McAfee, Phillip G. Baker (Sharon Baker), Katherine Victoria Zezima (Anthony Zezima), Mark Timothy Baker (Nancy Baker), James Lee Baker (Kellie Baker), Margaret Elizabeth Chandler (Traci Childress); grandchildren, Paul Baker, Todd Baker, Kristin Sargent, Jason Baker, Christopher R. Baker, Brad Gilchrist, Stacie Gilchrist-Zezima, Joe Zezima, Christopher M. Baker, Michelle Baker, Michael Baker, Katie Baker, Maggie Baker, Madison Chandler; and great grandchildren, Hannah, Taylor, Lukas, Emma, Dylan, Allison. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 2 o’clock at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Blair Boyd Zant officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the time of service at the church.
