With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Martin, who passed away peacefully at the age of 94. A man of unwavering integrity, boundless warmth, and contagious enthusiasm, Martin touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him during his 50 years as a cab driver in New York and Atlanta, Martin never met a stranger.
Born in New York in 1929, Martin grew up in a world where baseball was more than just a sport; it was a passion that would become an integral part of his life. Martin could tell you stats on any player as well as any team. He ensured that each year, he found the baseball book of stats, regardless of the drive to find it. You could find Martin cheering on his favorite teams the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves. Baseball was his joy and his solace, a timeless connection to the purest of American pastimes.
But Martin's talents didn't end with his love for baseball. His voice, rich and resonant, was a gift that brought joy to all who heard it. With a song in his heart and a melody on his lips, he enchanted audiences with his performances, his voice filling the room with warmth and emotion. Whether singing along to old classics or crooning the tunes of his youth, Martin had a rare ability to capture the essence of a song and make it his own, he even went on to win the senior Idol contest in Florida. Martin was also an avid reader and also enjoyed watching old movies.
Beyond his passions, Martin was a pillar of his community, known for his generosity, kindness, and unyielding spirit. His gentle demeanor and ready smile could brighten even the darkest of days, and his wisdom and guidance were sought by all who knew him. He lived his life with purpose and grace, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who crossed his path.
Martin is survived by Flora Werfel, his high school sweetheart whom he was lucky to reconnect with following the passing of both of their spouses; son and daughter in law, Gary and Kelley Coyne; grandchildren, Charlotte and Stephen; great grandchildren, Dawson, Easton and Reagan; as well as Flora’s daughter who became like Martins own daughter, Emily Riggan.
Martin leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
