Kevin Byrne Callahan, 53, died unexpectedly at his residence on August 19, 2012 less than a week after celebrating his 24th wedding anniversary. Born on September 16, 1958 in Washington, DC as the third of ten children to the late Mary Byrne and Robert L. Callahan, Jr. Kevin was first and foremost a father and family man. He grew up in Dunwoody and proudly attended St. Jude and St. Pius X Catholic High School where he helped create a tradition of excellence on both the football and soccer fields in the mid-seventies. After attending many prestigious institutions, he obtained his degree from Control Data Institute in Atlanta, GA. Kevin was affectionately known as “Uncle Heaven” by his thirty-four nieces and nephews, and is best remembered for his infectious laugh and his hearty sense of humor. An avid fisherman, he was feared by both the fresh and salt water variety. He was an armchair coach and a devout fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. He also had a passion for NASCAR and golf. Most notably, only a few inches separated Kevin from a million dollar hole in one at a St. Pius Alumni event as evidenced by the infamous YouTube video. Amazingly, Kevin was always able to find time for family and friends and was loved as a grill master and a renowned gardener whose tomato seedlings can be found in the best gardens of the South. Trivia was perhaps Kevin’s greatest forte and he was both loathed and loved at Lucky’s Tavern in Roswell as a consistent member of a winning Wednesday night trivia team. Kevin was predeceased by his parents, and by two sisters, Ann Carolan Callahan and Megan Eileen Callahan Ryan. He is survived by his wife, Kim, his daughters Maggie and Mary Rose and brothers: Bob (Kathy), Tom (Judy), Neal (Teri), John (Valerie) and Dennis (Emily) and sisters Maureen Gottfried (George, Sheila Spikes (Andy) and brother-in-law Tom Ryan. A visitation and prayer service will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2012 from 6-8:00 pm at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Jude Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Dr, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Mary Byrne Callahan memorial scholarship at St. Pius X Catholic Church, or to Toni’s Camp/the Disabilities Ministry of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
