Mrs. Landman was born April 23, 1916 in Queens, New York. Her parents, Jacob and Sara Lipsky, had immigrated from Russia, arriving at Ellis Island around 1903. After graduating from Pace College Business School, Joan turned down other employment opportunities in order to help her parents by working in their candy store. She worked in their store for several years, and it was there that she met Leon “Lee” Landman. Joan and Lee were married in 1942, and enjoyed 62 years together. In 1983, Joan and Lee moved from Astoria, New York to Sunrise, Florida, where they had 21 years enjoying their retirement. Joan moved from Florida to Dunwoody, Georgia in 2018. On her 105th Birthday she was presented with a Key to the City by the Mayor of Dunwoody.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lee Landman; her parents, Jacob and Sara “Sonya” Lipsky; her brother Charles, and her daughter-in-law, Dorothy. She is survived by her children, Wayne Landman of Sandy Springs, Georgia, and Bruce Landman and wife Eleanor of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren Judy, Robert and his wife Annie; Emma and Sarah; great-grandchildren Madeline and Tommy Landman, and Stephanie, Juliet, and Danny Schieder; and several nieces and nephews.
Joan was a very kind and loving person, always wanting to help others. Her compassion was not only directed toward other people, but also to animals. Joan enjoyed playing card games and word games, reading, and traveling. She also loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. Above all, she loved spending time with her family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brighton Gardens of Dunwoody for their kindness and care over the last four years.
A memorial and visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, at Sandy Springs Chapel – 136 Mount Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation be made to DeKalb County Animal Services, 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341, https://dekalbanimalservices.com/donate.
