George S. Jordan

George Jordan, age 91, passed away November 12, at St. Joseph’s Hospital from congestive heart failure, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Frances, and sons Howard (Mary) and Ralph (Natalie) and two granddaughters Grace and Brooke. George was born in New York City and after graduating Long Beach high school, he moved to Washington, DC, where he was inducted into the Army. He served on active duty in Europe during WWII with the 4th Armored Division under General George Patton and arrived at Normandy on D-Day plus 30. After the war, George resumed his studies at George Washington University, where he received his law degree. He was a member of the DC Bar and was employed as an attorney in the Chief Counsel’s Office of the IRS, and then later entered into private practice.

George and family moved to Atlanta in 1973 and he established a commercial casualty insurance brokerage agency, which he operated until 1997. He then became certified as a mediator through the local court system.

George was a man of boundless energy and many interests. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans Post 112, where he was elected the Judge Advocate. He was also a member of the Atlanta WWII Round Table, and the North Atlanta Men’s Club. He especially enjoyed serving as a Chairman of the MJCCA’s Edgewise Speakers Program for seniors, for which he worked vigorously to bring in weekly speakers with a wide range of topics. His interests in politics led him to be a delegate in 2008 at the Republican National Presidential Convention. At age 50, he took up tennis and quickly became a top player. His passion for the game led him to win numerous local competitions. When in his 70’s and 80’s he won several medals at the Senior Olympics both statewide and nationally.

Above all, George enjoyed people and he will be missed by the many with whom he participated in discussion groups, book club, card games and other activities. His funeral will be Sunday, November 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Rd, Sandy Springs, in the Sunrise Chapel, with Rabbi Alexandria Shuval-Weiner officiating. On the evenings of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, at 7:00 p.m. the traditional memorial service will be held at the Jordan’s home in Norcross.
