Mary Doherty Cormier

Mary Rita Doherty was born in Boston to the late John and Mary (Lynch) Doherty, May 16, 1940, and grew up in Dorchester, MA. Mary graduated from the Boston Latin School in 1957, and attended Boston State College, receiving a BA in Education in 1961 and a Master’s in Education in 1965. She married Raymond Cormier in 1972, and settled in Sandwich soon after.

Mary was a middle school English teacher in the Boston Public Schools until she relocated to Sandwich to raise her family in 1974. Years later, she returned to teaching at Sacred Heart School in Kingston where she enjoyed teaching junior high until retiring in 2011.

In her retirement, Mary was an active member of Corpus Christi Church, and volunteered at Mary’s Closet. She enjoyed playing Rummikub with her friends and loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking them to Snake Pond and many playgrounds around the Cape. When not busy volunteering or driving her grandkids around, she enjoyed sitting on her lounger in the yard reading a good book and chatting with the neighbors.

Mary is survived by her husband Raymond, of 51 years; her four children: Paul Cormier of Lynn, Andrew Cormier of Sandwich, Anne Wyman and her husband Hugh of Medford, and Laurie Ruszala and her husband Paul of Sandwich; her siblings: Sheila Scannell and her husband Bob of Bridgewater, Ellen Platt and her husband Ryan of Walnut Creek CA, Jean Nieswand and her husband Steve of Virginia Beach VA, and Thomas Doherty and his wife Kathy of Marshfield; her sisters-in-law: Patricia Doherty of Walpole, Barbara Doherty of Billerica, and Bernadette Doherty of Arlington; her grandchildren: Jane, Thomas, Laura, Claire, Lucy, Joseph and Raymond; along with many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Dr. Philip Doherty, Joseph Doherty and Daniel Doherty. Mary had a deep love for all of these family members, the Cormier family and her many friends from Dorchester to Sandwich.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in her name.

A viewing will be held Thursday, June 22nd from 4-7 pm at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich. Rite of Christian Burial Mass will take place Friday, June 23rd at 11 am at Corpus Christi Church in Sandwich. Burial will follow at Sandwich Town Cemetery.
