Robert grew up in San Francisco and spent most of his childhood in Potrero Hill. He attended, Daniel Webster Elementary School, Portola Jr High School and Galileo High School, which he completed through 11th grade. He met Paulette Peltier (Johnson) while living in the Mission District, they became a couple, then married on July 21, 1967 and moved to the Bay View District. Of this union a daughter, De’Onna Johnson was born. Robert was a very devoted husband; father and he loved his grandkids. He spent most of his career working in the production/manufacturing industry. He worked for The San Francisco Can Company for a number of years before he eventually landed a job with The American Licorice Factory; a job which he held until he became permanently disabled in 1989.
Robert was an avid music lover and as he got older Jazz became one of his favorite genre’s, Najee and Boney James to name a few artists. Robert could also sing and once managed a group, which included himself his sisters and sister in-laws, in fact they, as he would always be proud to tell people, “cut a record”. Most days before he lost his hearing and voice, he would wear his earphones and you could see him rocking away singing to every song. In fact the staff at Dialysis would always say Robert would wear his Walkman, yes, Walkman, Robert had not adapted to the new technology, he held onto his old Walkman cassette/cd player and the super large headphones just to feel the music bumping in his hears.
Robert was a Science Fiction and wrestling fanatic and loved to watch anything science fiction related or the wrestling. When he lost his sight he would still tune in and listen, until he could no longer do that.
Robert loved his family dearly, always welcomed you in his home and would give the shirt off his back. He lived a life of strength and courage till the end.
Robert was also preceded in death by sister Lenda Flores, and brother Roger Stanford.
He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Paulette Johnson, Two daughters, De’Onna Jack (Joe), Mickalla Oliver (Edward), two sons Fortina Collins (Tanisha) and Cameron Fleming. His Aunt Georgia Leonard, six sisters, Leveal Johnson, Sandra Dickerson (Greg), Janice Stanford, Rhonda Johnson, Georgette Stanford, Bridgette Stanford and two brothers, George Stanford Jr, Lewis Stanford. He also leaves to cherish his memory 14 grandchildren, Jesse Sykes, Markisha McBroom, Alexis Jack, Adryanna Sykes, Michael McBroom, Alexandria Jack, Ashley Collins, Tyler Collins, Miya Pope, Maleka Pope, Marissa Oliver, Fortina Collins Jr, Faraji Collins and Rasheed Collins and a whole host of other relatives and friends.
