Laverne Leo Beacock, affectionately known as "Vern," passed away on October 11, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on August 10, 1937, Vern leaves behind a legacy of music, mentorship, and laughter that will resonate in the hearts of many.
A dedicated music educator for 36 years, Vern inspired countless young musicians to pursue their passions and excel in their craft. His tireless work ethic was evident in his daily routine of teaching at schools, mentoring private students, and sharing his expertise at local colleges. An accomplished percussionist in both jazz and classical music, he performed professional jazz gigs on the drumset and spent seven years as a timpanist with the San Jose Symphony. His enthusiasm for music was matched only by his incredible sense of humor.
Vern earned a Master’s in Music from Eastern Washington State University, which further enhanced his ability to guide budding musicians. He was a true champion for the arts, believing in the transformative power of music.
In addition to his love for music, Vern was an avid outdoorsman. He cherished nature, enjoying camping, hiking, fishing, and riding his motorbike. Each fall, he looked forward to traveling in his motorhome for camping adventures in the Northern California mountains, where he created lasting memories with his brothers and family.
Vern is survived by his three beloved children, Sandi, Kyra, and Wendy, along with his son-in-law, Jason Lewis. He was a proud grandfather to four amazing grandchildren—Megan and Samantha Gagliardi, and Keenan and Declan Lewis—who he delighted in watching them develop their own musical talents.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Leone Beacock; his brothers, Dale and Nordean Beacock; his sister, Arliss Johnston; and his beloved wife, Marilyn Beacock.
There will be a gathering at the family’s home after the service to remember Vern’s life and legacy. Friends and family are invited to share their memories and honor a remarkable man who dedicated his life to the joy of music, the beauty of nature, and the love of his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Berryessa Music Boosters, which benefits musicians in the school district where Vern taught.
