Virgil was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 27, 1951. He passed November 8, 2024. Virgil was the second child of Emma Jackson and the eighth child of Virgil Hansbrough. He had two sisters, Jurine and Susan. He was an avid reader, creative and inventive. He obtained his solo pilots license in high school and loved running, sailing, and rowing long boats. He had a passion for music, film and for painting, creating works of his own.
Virgil obtained his Masters in history at the UW-Madison/Milwaukee, but also he also loved the sciences: geology, astronomy, etc. He would go on teach school in Germany and later traveled to China.
He moved to California where he obtained his teaching credentials at SFSU and taught school in the San Francisco Unified School District for 30+ years. But Virgil held many working class jobs: fry cook, Long Shoreman, tourist guide, taxi driver, and more. He deeply identified as a working class man.
He is survived by his older sister, Jurine, his nephew, Raul and his grand-niece, Emma. Virgil will be greatly missed by his family, loved ones and friends.
