On September 17, Ruth Roe left her beloved city by the bay, passing away peacefully at the age of 96. She was a lifelong resident of San Francisco, attending Commodore Sloat, Aptos Junior High, Lowell High School, and graduating from UC Berkeley in 1944. She met her first husband, Jim Hale, as a candy striper during WWII, and the two were married in 1946. They were married for more than 30 years and had three children together. She later wed George Roe, and the two spent twenty happy years together.
Ruth lived life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling ,whenever possible. She was a longtime supporter of the arts, and could recount highlights from any recent Giants, Warriors, or 49ers game. She had a quick wit, a quiet sense of humor, and even in her 96th year, maintained a weekly bridge game with friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, grace, dignity, and profound love of friends and family.
She was loved by her three children: Elizabeth Hale, Jim Hale (Donna), and Lisa Varady (Robert); seven grandchildren: Kristen Kelly (Jim), Jake Hale, Charlie Hale, David Hale, Kaitlin McKee (Matt), Ashley Smith (Loren), and Drew Varady (Turner); as well as her six great-grandchildren.
Private services are being held. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
