Mrs. Hazel Wong Yuen

Hazel Wong Yuen passed away peacefully on May 14, 2022, at the age of 97. She was a beloved wife, Ma, Grammy, GG, sister, aunt, cousin, and, friend to all who were touched by her. She was born on 12/12/24; the third of four children. Her siblings preceded her in death (Ada Mew, Albert Wong, and Jean Chu). Later in life, she and her sisters became traveling companions and we lovingly called them the “LOL’s” (for Little Ole Ladies)! They are reunited in heaven, laughing it up!

Hazel met the love of her life, Howard Yuen, at Lake Tahoe and they married on May 25, 1947; a marriage that lasted 66 years until Howard’s death in 2013 (at age 100). Hazel graduated from Stockton High School in 1943 and San Joaquin General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She worked at various hospitals (St. Luke’s, St. Mary’s and Hahnemann), then Telegraph Hill Clinic, and closed her career as a nurse practitioner at Health Center #4, City and County of San Francisco in 1987. She was an inspiration to many with her wisdom and positive advice.

It is often said that laughter is the best medicine. In addition, Hazel was known in her family and social circles as the life of the party! She was fun, vibrant and full of spunk! If it wasn’t dress ups or dances, there were dinner parties and big bashes for momentous birthdays or anniversaries. Hazel was very artistic and loved sewing and knitting the most. She enjoyed taking classes to learn new skills and crafts. In retirement, she volunteered with Salvation Army Auxiliary, crafting knick-knacks and selling them at their fundraisers. She also participated with the craft group Creative Corner. In her latter years, she took up creative writing. She enjoyed traveling the world, but Lake Tahoe always held a special place in her heart.

Hazel is survived by children Linda (Richard Ng), Jeff (Ellen), Gale (Dean Michelson, companion), 4 grandchildren – Donine Ettinger, Rudy Ng, Ryan Osaka & Jonathan Yuen, 3 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Many thanks to her caregivers and staff at Peninsula del Rey and ONR. A private celebration of life will be held at a future date. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
