Dear Wen's family. I am Cindy (Shiqiu), Wen's classmate during the college time back in Shanghai. It was so sudden and shocking that Wen has passed away. Her warm smile, her sweetness and brightness always remaining in my heart. It has been so many times, we have talked to each other on the wechat.  I knew she was ill, and missed her at our class reunion in October. Her sweet voice is still on my cell phone and her kindness invitation became her last voice forever. All of our medical school classmates are deeply saddened by the loss. The shocking news is beyond any words can describe. There is no grief like the grief that does not speak. We will always remember her deeply in our hearts. She in in heaven free like a bird, no longer in pain, and no more suffering. She is the shiniest star watching over us, forever Remembered, forever Missed!! 
Now hse is in a better place with our father. Please accept our deepest condolences, just know that we are here for you, especially during this difficult time. In loving memories, in God, we trust!  Shiqiu

I was the on-call Hospital Chaplain for UC San Diego Medical Center when Wendy's family needed spiritual counseling and emotional support the day Wendy left earth for heaven.  Though chaplains are trained to support patients and families of all faiths (or no faith), I found the most loving and devoted Christian family in the room, namely Grace and Richard.  Wendy was no longer conscious when I arrived. 
     Every thought they expressed was concern for Wendy and her comfort and how much they loved her.  They wanted to make sure that every intent and action they were considering was in accordance with Christian Biblical principles.   And they were.  Emotions filled the room as Richard and Grace were anticipating the grief and separation that was to follow.  Yet, through all of the gut-wrenching emotions, love prevailed.  I spent several hours with the family, reading Scripture, praying, and giving counsel.  When they made the decision to transfer Wendy to "comfort care", they knew it would not be long as she was only being kept alive by modern medicine.  They took turns holding her in their arms expressing their great love for her.  Wendy's transition to heaven came quickly as Grace held her in her arms.
     I have seen many people wait to die until their loved ones left the room.  Not Wendy.  She wanted to depart surrounded by those she loved most.  I have never spent 4 hours on a single visit.  Richard and Grace are the most genuine, endearing, and loving family I have met in a very long time.  Wendy was the center of their universe, a bright-shining sun.  My heart sank for them when Wendy died.  Through it all, the Nie family is about Love.  Even in hardship, Love prevailed.
