October 2, 1942 – September 26, 2017
Beloved wife and mother passed away in her home of natural causes. Virginia was a well-known, well-respected, and well-loved member of the San Diego community for 62 years. She gave tirelessly to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW). Starting as a member, Virginia was elected as a representative and later the Director of the Southern California region. Tens of thousands of employees experienced better labor conditions due to her knowledge and skill with contract negotiations, arbitrations, and retirement packages. As a labor leader, she exhibited an unmatched passion for excellence; Virginia was dedicated to improving the lives of members and their families. She received numerous accolades, acknowledgements, and awards throughout her illustrious career. In 2004, she was recognized as Labor Leader of the Year for San Diego County. Additionally, Virginia served both as Vice President and a member of the Executive Board of the San Diego Labor Council.
Virginia had tireless energy that she spent with dearly-loved family and friends. She is survived by her husband Carl; son Eric; daughter-in-law Yulia; twin grandchildren Evan and Emma; sisters Irene La Rocco, Phyllis Beilharz, Sharon Mateja; brother U.J. Mateja; and hundreds of other family members, friends, and associates.
May she rest in peace with love.
