BRUNO, THOMAS December 11, 1922 ~ March 31, 2012Thomas A. Bruno, 89, of Point Loma, died at home on March 31, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer and surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, on December 11, 1922, son of the late Anthony Bruno and Anna (Scolavino) Bruno, both of Hackensack, NJ. He was the widower of Amy Luckett Bruno who died in 2009. He is survived by his two children, son Anthony (Susan Jones) of East Lyme, CT, and daughter Deborah (Charles Fendley) of San Diego, CA; grandsons LT Christopher Bruno of Seattle, WA, and Jeremy Bruno of Portland, OR; sister Marie Verderosa of New Jersey and brother Don Bruno of Florida. He was predeceased by sisters Nancy Cassata and Josephine Donahue and brother Pasquale, all of Brooklyn, New York.
Tom grew up in Hackensack, NJ, and Brooklyn, NY, where the family ran a Polish deli and several candy stores. Amy and Tom were married in August, 1945, in Brooklyn and lived in Brooklyn and Commack, NY, for 58 years. They moved to San Diego in 2003 to be near their daughter. Tom was a veteran of WWII when he served with the Third Army. After his discharge, he worked as a diesel mechanic in the home-heating-oil industry for 40 years, retiring in 1985. Tom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church of Ocean Beach at 11 AM on Tuesday, Apr 10. A graveside service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery will be private at a later date. Beardsley Mitchell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
