In 1972, Steve moved to Florida with his family. He attended Hialeah High School and graduated in 1980. After high school Steve moved back to California and went on to join the El Cajon Police Academy where he graduated from in March of 1986. He served 10 years of active duty in El Cajon, including six years in the K-9 unit before being wounded in the line of duty, receiving a Purple Heart, and two Police Medals before he was medically retired.
He married the love of his life, Lynette F. Tominia, on November 27, 1993 at Torrey Pines Christian Church. He started in 1999 at Sycuan Casino & Resort where he spent nearly 24 years serving in the surveillance department ending his career in 2022 as the Director of Surveillance.
Surviving Steve is his wife, Lynette (Tominia) Van Slyke; son Jeffrey Scott (wife Ariana); daughter Victoria Jenae Curo-Ruis (husband Austin); son Austin Thomas (fiancé Samantha); five grandchildren Kaden Alexander, Brayden Stephen, Kamrie Jenae, Kayleigh Renee, and Hunter Austin; mother Carolyn Chiriboga; step-mother Carol Van Slyke; siblings Bill Van Slyke, Kevin Woodward, Jennifer White and Rodrigo Chiriboga; and many nieces and nephews. His father Lewis William "Bill" Van Slyke Jr. preceded him in death.
A visitation for Stephen will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121. A funeral service will occur Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121. A graveside service will occur Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121.
