Born August 25, 1929 in San Diego, CA, Norma died on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 of natural causes. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Armand V. Campillo and survived by her sons: John G. (Elizabeth), Paul A, Mark J; her daughter Margo M.; grandchildren Ashley, Bradley, Luke, Noah, Jack, and Amelia; and great grandchild, Stella. Norma is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Rose Marie Mabile and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Norma Campillo was born in the Little Italy area of San Diego. She was a resident of Point Loma growing up since 1932 when her parents, the late John D and Louise A. Ghio purchased a home in Loma Portal. Her father, along with his brother-in-law, the late Louis C. Strada, founded, owned and operated the Peoples Fish Company for many years.
Norma attended Loma Portal Elementary, Dana Jr. High and graduated from Point Loma High School in 1947. She attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles for two years, transferred to SDSU and graduated with a BA in Education in 1951. She worked for Bank of America in Point Loma for several years and later as a K-1 teacher in San Diego City Schools. She married Armand, who worked for the City of San Diego, in 1961 and had her first child in 1965. Through the years they had 3 more children and lived in Point Loma. They sold their home in 2000 and moved into a condo in downtown San Diego in 2001.
Norma was a former member and one-time President of the St. Agnes Church Ladies Guild, a member of the Social Service Auxiliary, as well has the Mercy Hospital Foundation, and was Co-chair of her High School Class 50th Anniversary and Reunion in 1997.
A visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at the Pacific Beach La Jolla Chapel at 4710 Cass St. Funeral Services will be held at 9 am on Friday, December 16, 2022 at Our Lady of the Rosary at 1668 State St.
