Kindness first comes to mind regarding my pretty cousin, Maria.  At the same time, she was strong.  She was a key linchpin to the family, and beyond. She was true.  Her passing hits everyone who knew her very hard, unsurprisingly.  Thank you so much for everything, Maria. So many memories.  So many good times.  Thank you.  I love you.

Maria Cherry Castro. I knew her through her Mom, my very good friend, Ate Tess Malabey. The only daughter. The rose among the thorns. 

Soft spoken, but she could be feisty as she fights for the rights of those she loves. Despite her own physical frailties,  she has that relentless devotion to her family especially to those who are in need. Unlike her Mom who loves to be in a spotlight being a songstress, Maria enjoys working behind the scenes. Never have I seen her dressed up in trendy fashions with fancy accessories and make up. I must have missed those times for I do see her pictures taken professionally at her best, physically, so to speak. She’s an epitome of simplicity and humility.

She maybe blessed with a singing voice like her mother, but I have not heard her sing. I must have missed her singing moments too. It goes without saying, she is so blessed to have a loving, caring husband, Armando, whose eyes are set on her alone. Like that song in the 50’s, “I Only Have Eyes For You”. No wonder, wherever Armando is assigned for work, Maria would travel with him regardless of her medical conditions.

To the bereaved family, allow me to quote these words of comfort: “In these moments of heartbreaking grief, the reason for that empty space is because we were blessed with someone who loved us so beautifully, it occupied an entire part of our soul.” (Chelsea Ohlemiller, American educator, writer). And from an unknown author, “ Whenever grief tries to steal the beauty of your memories, just remember: LOVE. NEVER. DIES.”

Maria (or Cherry as we know her) was a rock in our family. When it came to special events and family milestones, Maria made sure to rally the troops and make sure the entire family was there in support. She was a matriarch in both her extended family as well as her immediate family.  She was loved by her husband and her children and was never afraid to show how much she loved them back. 

She will be missed by all who knew her but we are grateful for the fact that she lives in the memories and lives of those she touched! 

Maria was sweet and loving person. I worked with her in 2001 central monitoring in Poway. She was always so helpful when I needed her even if it was at midnight. Miss you rest in peace my friend. My condolences to Armando and her children

Maria has a good heart. On Sundays me and her mom Tess went to church. Maria would call her mom and tell her she wants to meet us for lunch with Armando. She always offers to pay. I've always felt like a part of their family. Last summer, they celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary- and I noticed that she is beautiful just like her daughter- they looked like twins. No wonder Armando fell in love with her! Before they traveled to California, they came to my house to install a security system. They were here for 2 days; very patient. On the last day we were talking, she mentioned her brother Crispin with tears falling out of her eyes. We prayed together and hugged each other not knowing it was the last time I would see her again. She gave me a gift and I will remember her always here in my heart and in my thoughts. 
PSALM 34:18 The LORD is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
