Joanne Mangiameli passed away peacefully at her home September 7, 2015 surrounded by her loving daughters. Joanne was born October 5, 1936 in San Diego, CA and was a lifelong resident of San Diego. She graduated from San Diego High School in 1954 where she was the manager of the High School Choir. She married the love of her life Joseph Mangiameli on August 15, 1954 and soon was followed by five daughters. Joanne then went back to school at San Diego State University and then earning a Masters Degree from USIU in San Diego in 1975. She worked for San Diego Youth Services and founded and directed the San Diego Foster Care Resource Center in 1976 which helped find foster homes for adolescents and offered support and aftercare services for foster kids and foster families. She was licensed as a Marriage, Family & Child Counselor in 1977. She then obtained a PHD in Psychology from the University of Humanistic Studies in 1978. She then started the Normal St Clinic for Pain Management until retirement in 1987. She then continued working as an Income Property Owner, Manager until her death. She was a lover of animals especially her horse Traviata & dogs Jake and Max. She was an avid traveler often taking her daughters and grandchildren on special vacations with her. She was larger than life and led an extraordinary life leaving a legacy of kindness and passion. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph Mangiameli in 1987. She is survived by her five daughters Georgette Gavin and her husband Steven of Oceanside, CA, Patti Delaney and husband Mark of La Quinta, CA, Joni Skinner and husband Kim of La Mesa, CA, Lisa Stoia and husband John of La Jolla, CA and Annette Edwards and husband Jon of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Patrick Gavin, Dylan Gavin, Rebecca Delaney, Alexa Delaney, Alexandra Skinner, Matthew Irvine, Stephanie Edwards, Jocelyn Edwards, Jared Edwards and Ian Edwards and step-grandchildren John, Patrick and Kristina Stoia. In addition, she is survived by her brother George Geanoulis and his wife Sandra and nephews Louis and Stephen.
A visitation will be held at Merkley Mitchell Mortuary on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 4 - 7 pm. A funeral mass will be held the following day, September 14, 2015 at Immaculata Church at 10:00 am, with a reception to follow. There will be a private family interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
