JoAnn Shartel age 76, of Tierrasanta, passed away June 23, 2019 surrounded by friends and family. She was a born in Cleveland Ohio November 27, 1942. JoAnn came to San Diego when she joined the Navy after graduating from nursing school in Ohio. She was a Navy nurse during the Vietnam war and worked in Japan treating soldiers that were sent there from combat. Upon her return to San Diego, she worked briefly as a floor nurse at Grossmont hospital where she met Dr. Roger English who convinced her to come work for him. She later met and worked with Dr. Sandy Jassmann and Maggie Forys and was drawn to take on diabetes education as a career. A few years later, she started working part-time and then full-time as a registered nurse at Scripps while also supporting the diabetes education needs in Dr. Jeff Sandler’s office for 37 years. At Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, she served in nearly every capacity, including delivery of inpatient and outpatient diabetes education to conducting research projects side by side with the clinical research team and endocrinologists. JoAnn also was a certified Insulin Pump Trainer and Diabetes Educator and worked as a home health nurse. She was one of the leading and most respected Certified Diabetes Educators in San Diego and the Past President of San Diego Associated Diabetes Educators. Lily Diabetes Journey Award recognized JoAnn as a person with type 1 diabetes who successfully managed diabetes with insulin for 50 years. She also received the Allene Van Son Distinguished service award that recognizes outstanding contributions and service to American Association of Diabetes Educators. She participated in the local San Diego AADE chapter where she was a mentor to many younger diabetes educators. Her hobbies included Bridge with her friends and participating with the Tierrasanta Senior Group and Investment Club and she was a dedicated and involved member parishioner at the Ascension Catholic Church. She was involved with community service through Camp Wana Kura, a camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes. She graciously shared her extensive expertise in diabetes to both people with diabetes and Health Care Professionals.
JoAnn is survived by her Brother Charles Arndt (Coleen) and sister Kathe Smith (John) and sons Matthew, Mark and Michael (Valerie) Shartel and her nine grandchildren, Shelby, Madison, Nathan, Travis, Tanner, Tayten, Brody, Lena and Thea Shartel.
JoAnn also known as"Moggie" was a loving and proud Mother and Grandmother to her three children and nine grandchildren. She had a love for baseball and was a Padres Season ticket holder for many years. We were all lucky to know and learn from JoAnn. She will be missed by all of us.

The vigil will be held on Sunday July 7th, 2019 at 12pm with a reception to follow.
The funeral mass will be held on Monday July 8th at 11am. She will be honored as a veteran and the burial will follow at 2pm at Miramar memorial cemetery 5795 noble drive, San Diego ca 92122.
Flowers are welcome, contributions may be made to camp Wana Kura part of the American diabetes association. Teaching children with diabetes they are not alone in dealing with this disease.
