It is with great sadness that the family of Jeffrey “Jeff” Scott Ritchie announces his passing on December 15, 2017 at the age of 63. Jeff was a community leader and loving Son, Father, Brother and Grandfather. He was born January 28, 1954 in Pasadena, California, son of Kenneth and Ann Ritchie and was raised in Encinitas, California. After graduating from San Dieguito High School in 1972, he attended college at San Diego State University, graduating in 1976. He went on to complete the MBA degree at National University in 1982 and completed additional coursework at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
Jeff was employed in the waste collection and recycling industry for almost 40 years. He began his career with Mashburn Waste and Recycling Services in 1978 and was named President and Chief Operating Officer of the firm in 1996. EDCO Waste & Recycling Services acquired the firm in 1998 and he was named Vice President. He was later promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Jeff was actively involved in industry organizations. He was named President of the San Diego County Disposal Association six times and was past Chair or Member of a number of other waste industry organizations. He was also past Chair for the San Marcos and Vista Chamber of Commerce.
Jeff was also very active in North San Diego County community activities and organizations. He was Past Chair of the Poway Senior Center Board of Directors; Member of the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos Board of Directors Executive Committee; Past President of the San Marcos Kiwanis Club; and Past Member of the Board of Managers of the Ecke and Palomar YMCA. He also received numerous awards for community service, such as the Palomar College Comet Award and the Encinitas ELLIE award.
He was devoted to his family and will be remembered for his deep devotion to the North San Diego County community, his work ethic, and his candid sense of humor.
Jeff is survived by his mother Ann; his fiancée, Noemi Rivera; three brothers, Jay, Jamie and Richard; two children, Michael and Sarah; and five grandchildren Wyatt, Bennett, Jameson, Mackenzie and Madison along with countless extended family, friends and community members who miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, A. Kenneth Ritchie.
A memorial service is scheduled in the Chapel at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., to be followed by a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos.
