Jeanne Louise (Stein) Schaefer Metcalf, wife of the late Royal Metcalf, 90, a resident of San Diego since 1944, passed away on July 9, 2017, surrounded by family members. Jeanne was born in Norwalk, Ohio, to Carl William Stein and Helen May (Brutsche) Stein.
She worked for and retired at Home Federal Savings and Loan Association, acquired her Associate Degree at San Diego State University, then pursued her interest in The Arts, volunteering many social activity hours at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. She also belonged to the San Diego Opera Guild and was a member of the University Club for many years.
Jeanne was an accomplished pianist and a listed California Artist, and had the privilege and opportunity to study for a month in China in 1988 and was honored to meet and study with Wang Dongling. She belonged to the Chinese Brush Painting Society in San Diego serving terms as Treasurer and President, and participated in yearly showings at Studio 21 in Balboa Park. She also displayed and sold her work at the Del Mar Fair.
She met Dorothy Day in the early 1960s and joined the Catholic Worker’s Movement, dedicating many hours to this project until 2007.
Jeanne is survived by her eight children, Leslie (Schaefer) Carman, Henry Fred Schaefer III, Steffani (Schaefer) Strang (husband David), Mark Schaefer (wife Evelyn), Christopher Schaefer (wife Lynda), Steve Schaefer, Cynthia (Schaefer) Eisinger (husband Richard), and Karin (Schaefer) Davis (husband Michael). She leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchilren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
