Harold Greenwell was a true member of our Country’s Greatest Generation. He served proudly in World War II, married the love of his life, was father to 6 children whom he loved dearly, and loved living in San Diego. He succumbed to a virulent form of cancer after a brief but futile fight.
Harold was born in Los Angeles, California. He was the older brother to David Greenwell. When World War II came around, he joined the Army Air Corps and became a flight crew member on B17’s. He flew 38 missions in Europe with the 379th bomber group. While on leave he met and eventually married the love, Mary Della Benoit. They were married on December 16, 1943 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Point Loma. At the end of the War Harold and Della landed back in San Diego where they built their Sunset Cliffs home in 1947. They have resided there ever since. Over the years Harold and Della had 6 children, Carolyn, Katherine, Karen, Stephen (Augie), James, and Robert.
Harold worked for the Defense Department as a contract administrator for 38 years. After retiring, he quickly tired of retirement and returned to work as a contractor, auditing government contracts for 10 more years. During most of his adult life, he and Della were avid RV’ers. They traveled throughout the U.S. with the children, until 1 by 1 they grew up and went on their own. They then took grandchildren with them on trips.
Harold and Della were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church their entire marriage. He particularly loved family get-togethers and barbeques. He was always quick to accept a dinner invitation and loved bus trips to local casinos.
Harold is survived by his beloved Della, wife of 68 years. He was preceded in death by his son Robert, who also succumbed to cancer. His survivors include his brother David and his children Carolyn (Sonny) Kremer, Katherine (Paul) Fernandes, Karen (Ralph) Middleton, Stephen-Augie (Dave Hinrichs)Greenwell, James Greenwell, and Tamara Greenwell (Robert’s widow). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren who loved him greatly, Toni, Sheri, Steve, Kathryn, David, Logan and Cooper. Survivors also include a number of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as long time friends.
Pop, we will REALLY miss you.
