Our beloved Father, Glen Edwin Dow passed away peacefully at home in Oceanside, CA at the age of 94 on December 10th. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Dow) von Doehren & son-in-law Jim von Doehren, daughter-in-law Shari Sanchez & son-in-law Mike Sanchez, son Spencer Dow, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. Glen was preceded in death by, Betty wife of 56 years, daughters Brenda and Amy, sons Robert and Martin and granddaughter Katie.
He was born in Wooster, Ohio on May 9, 1930, enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18 achieving the rank of Master Sargent stationed at Fairchild Air Base in Spokane, WA. He met his wife Betty in Spokane, moved to Long Beach, CA to begin their journey in life. After a few years in California and Ohio they moved to Spokane to raise their family. Glen began his career in the world of beauty as a barber then became a hair stylist. He began as a hair stylist at the Crescent department store in downtown Spokane. Glen and Betty opened their first beauty salon on the South Hill in Spokane. Employing a staff of stylists and running out of room for more stylists they decided to open their second beauty salon on the North side of Spokane. Glen’s interest in sharing his knowledge and passion about cosmetology led Glen and Betty to start a vocational school, Glen Dow Academy of Hair Design on Riverside in Downtown Spokane in 1969. Under Glen’s leadership the school operated for 55 years. Glen wrote the curriculum for student education, taught cosmetology classes, conducted extensive seminars in the state, participated in styling competitions, winning prestigious awards for his skill and artistry in every contest. Glen served on the Washington State Hair Fashion Board for several years developing a reputation in the Pacific Northwest as a leader in the Beauty Industry.
Glen enjoyed playing golf with his family and friends. He spent cherished time watching his family grow up at the family lake cabin at Newman Lake, WA. He loved to spend time boating and enjoyed sharing his lake home with others.
Glen’s journey in life has had a profound effect educating and helping develop future Beauty Professionals in the Pacific Northwest. Many graduates and employees of Glen Dow Academy of Hair Design have gone on to successful careers within the industry. Glen’s story in life will live on for many lifetimes.
A private family celebration of life will be held at El Camino Memorial-Sorrento Valley, CA on January 6th.
