Francis “Joe” McGuire, 87, passed away on May 27th at Scripps Memorial Hospital. Joe was predeceased by his parents Mary Frances and Francis Joseph “Mac” McGuire, his half brother Jimmy Hutchison, and his half brother Don McGuire. He is survived by his brother Frank McGuire and his daughter Marla McGuire. Joe was born January 21st, 1936 in St. Louis Missouri.
After graduating Albuquerque High School in 1954, he went on to New Mexico State as an Engineering major in the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Before he could complete his degree he moved to California and became a Civil Engineer for the County of San Diego.
In 1962, he married the love of his life, Nita McGuire. In furtherance of his career, he went back to college at age 34 while working fulltime and supporting his wife and daughter. This resulted in him obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Arts and Sciences in Public Administration in 1974.
After working 38 years in a career that he loved, he retired from the Department of Public Works in 1999.
Not one to be idle, and passionate about helping his fellow retirees, he won a hard-fought campaign and was elected to the RESDC Board of Directors from 1992-1997.
Joe was charming, witty, and loved to laugh. In fact, his laugh could light up a room. He loved live theater, politics, dachshunds, and most of all jazz! A consummate storyteller, he would regale others with tales of a life well lived with a twinkle in his eye.
