Our Mom, Nana, and great friend was born to George & Ellen Razzore on 03/03/1931 in Seattle, Washington. She had one older brother, George Jr or “Georgie “growing up. She grew up in the great pacific northwest and came from a great Italian heritage and was very proud of it. Growing up meant spending lots of time going to family gatherings and celebrations. She spent weekends on family or friends’ farms along the Duwamish River, where the men would bring their homemade wine and play bocce ball, while the women would cook up fabulous Italian feasts.
Mom graduated from West Tech High in Seattle. Once she graduated, she along with a group of friends decided to join the USMC Reserves while she contemplated her future. Shortly after, the Korean War conflict escalated, and she was called into active duty on 08/07/1950. She qualified as a sharpshooter, but she never had to use those skills in the Marines. However, during her time in the Marine Corps, she was approached and recruited to be a part of a USMC marketing campaign for the future of women in the military. She spent the next couple of years supporting the United States Marines in an active role until she received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1952.
She returned home to pursue a college degree at the University of Washington where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition. She had many choices for her clinical training and decided to come to San Diego where she worked at the original Scripps Memorial Hospital on Prospect Street in La Jolla. She spent the next 16 years there as a dedicated registered dietitian. She spent her entire career in the field, retiring from Whittier Medical Center as Director of Food Services where was recognized for her compassion and innovation. Among many her many accomplishments she began the Meals on Wheels program at the Medical Center which served the under privileged in the community. She was bestowed Humanitarian of the Year Award from Whitter Medical Center.
Mom was all about her family. She was an incredible cook and our family all loved to gather as much as possible for her meals.
Mom loved to sing in the church choir, and did so for many years at St Brigid Catholic Church in Pacific Beach. She was a dedicated volunteer at UCSD Medical Center and gave thousands of hours and service back to the community. She sewed surgery caps for children at the Shiley Surgical Eye Center.
She is survived by her two children; Jim Barnwell (wife Pauline) and Kathy Lickert (husband Lloyd). She has 5 grandchildren; Ethan Lickert (wife Starlynn), Kelsea Hays (husband Jordan), Sarah Lickert, Carly Blair (husband Pat), and Michael Pinzini. She also has two great grandchildren; Nova Lickert, Teddy Blair, and more on the way!
Our Mom, Nana, and great friend will be greatly missed. She has left us with a legacy and life’s lessons that will not soon be forgotten. Rest in peace Mom, we love you.
Memorial Service will be June 16th, 2022 at Miramar Memorial Cemetery at 12:30pm.
