Andrews, Jr., Dr. Daniel Eddins August 14, 1921 to July 15, 2016 Dr. Daniel Eddins Andrews, Jr., 94, of San Diego passed away on July 15, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lawton, OK to Ruth Ford Andrews and Daniel Eddins Andrews, Sr. He was a devoted husband, beloved father and granddad, award-winning research scientist, accomplished haiku poet, gifted gardener, and culinary extraordinaire. After graduating from Lawton High School, Dan attended Baylor University. In 1942, before completing his studies, Dan accepted an opportunity to serve the war effort by working at a military laboratory in CA. This required that Dan take a special class at UCLA, composed of students from all over the U.S. From 1943 to 1946, Dan worked as an Assistant Physicist for the University of California Division of War Research in San Diego. On Valentine’s Day of 1943, Dan met his future wife Mary Luella Wade, who was skillfully beating soldiers from the nearby Barrage-Balloon Battery at the Riverlawn Dormitory Recreation Hall’s ping-pong tables. Mary’s laughter charmed Dan, who had entered the defense workers’ housing to pick up his cleaning. He challenged Mary to the next game and then beat her. When Mary disappeared without an introduction, Dan asked everyone for her name. A friend responded “Mary,” while a cousin responded “Lu.” Unaware of the correct spelling, Dan combined the names, calling her “Mary Lou,” and the name stuck. The two quickly discovered that they were born in the same year, both from Oklahoma, and had much in common. Married on April 1, 1944, their marriage became a long, loving union of 61 years, resulting in two children and a close-knit extended family. Ever the romantic, Dan kept the ping-pong ball from his first game with Mary. After their marriage, Dan and Mary briefly moved to Waco, TX, where Dan completed his B.S. in Math. They then returned to San Diego, and Dan accepted positions first at the Marine Physical Laboratory and then at the Navy Electronics Laboratory, where Dan served as a Project Manager and Division Head and later a Chief Engineer for Sonar Technology. While working at the laboratories, Dan completed an M.A. and Ph.D. in Physics through UCLA, conducting his thesis research on the weekends at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Mary and their children accompanied Dan to Scripps, where the children played in the hallway while their father worked. After Dan completed his Ph.D., Mary entered San Diego State College, earned a degree in Home Economics, and began teaching at Mission Bay High School. While Mary studied or graded papers from home, Dan often supported her by preparing a meal or treat for the family. Dan and Mary instilled in their children and grandchildren the tremendous value of education. During his career, Dan made significant research and development contributions in the areas of sonar and submarine technology. He served on several of the Navy’s Representative Committees, authored many reports and publications, and held ten patents. He also received numerous awards and commendations. In 1981, he earned the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, a Group Special Achievement Award, and a Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Dan traveled extensively for his job, which was one of his hobbies, making business trips to: Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Oahu, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Washington, D.C., always returning with gifts for his wife and children. After his retirement in 1982, Dan remained lively and intellectually curious, completing a book manuscript of haiku poems about his childhood, gardening in his backyard, preparing delicious meals, and tinkering in his home workshop. From 1958 to 2011, he volunteered as a judge for the annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, which he viewed as a way to support young people. Together, Dan and Mary traveled to China, Egypt, Israel, and Europe. Both were active, long-time members of the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach until their deaths. Survivors include Dan and Mary’s two children, Mary Elizabeth McCormick of Lakeside and Daniel Eddins Andrews III, M.D. of Napa and their spouses, Michael Francis McCormick, Sr. and Laurie Ellen Andrews. Other survivors are Dan and Mary’s six grandchildren: Michael Francis McCormick, Jr. of Los Angeles and Damon Daniel McCormick of Oakland, and Tria Blu Wakpa of Vallejo, Averyl Andrews Yaco of San Francisco, Lauren Andrea Skoczenski of Portland, ME, and Daniel Eddins Andrews IV of Napa and their spouses Erica Ha Yun McCormick, Makha Blu Wakpa, Benjamin Timothy Yaco, Peter Alan Skoczenski, and Kimberly Ann Aquino Andrews. In addition are three great-grandchildren, Emelina Pearl Skoczenski, Olin Asher Skoczenski, and Fawkes Newton George McCormick. To celebrate Dan’s exceptional life, visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Friday, July 22 at the Pacific Beach Chapel. Funeral services will occur 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Saturday, July 23 at the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach. Entombment at El Camino Memorial Park and a memorial gathering at the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach will follow.
