Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sorrentovalleychapel.com for the Walker family.
Clara Anne Walker was born August 2, 1939 in Brandon Mississippi to Mrs. Mary C. Brown of Franklin County, Mississippi and Mr. Sam Wright of Rankin County, Mississippi.
At an early age, Clara professed her faith in God and began her lifelong spiritual journey with membership in Rock Star Missionary Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi. After marriage, she joined Greer Chapel in Flowood, Mississippi where her husbands family were longtime members. For more than 50 years, her church home has been the Chapel at Naval Air Station, North Island where she taught Sunday School, served in various financial roles, assisted with special events, and served as an unofficial curator of the Chapel’s long history.
Once her youngest child was in school, Clara began her banking career as an On-Call Teller. From there, she moved on to part time, and eventually full time where she went from Teller to Operations Clerk, Operations Assistant, and finally ending her career in the Audit Department keeping everyone on their toes. After she retired in 1997, she did not lose a step and took up golf. She started with two golf groups but eventually settled on the National City Golf Club Women’s Club “Whiffers”. Clara also volunteered at the Chula Vista Literacy Center to help adults learn to read, and well after retirement, she even embraced new technology like texting and Facebook (although she much preferred talking on the phone and still insisted “cell phones were for talking not taking pictures”).
Clara was exceptionally creative and many friends and family were the recipients of that talent. She started with sewing clothes back in the day for her “unappreciative” elementary school age daughter. She also crocheted, macraméd, created Christmas wreaths as well as many other unusual projects. She was an avid collector of All God’s Children figurines and traveled to the AGC reunion in Gadsden, Alabama to interact with other collectors and meet the creator of the figurines.
In the spirit of giving rooted in her faith, Clara was a long time supporter of various charities including Mendenhall Ministries in Mississippi, San Diego Rescue Mission, Lupus Foundation, Biblical Ministries, among others.
In April 1957, Clara Anne Brown and Roddie Lee Walker Jr. were joined in Holy Matrimony in Rankin County, Mississippi. To this union, four children were born: Richard, Roddie III, Gregory, and Cheryl.
Through those children, Clara became the matriarch of the Walker family. She carried herself with grace, class, and dignity throughout her lifetime and maintained these traits through her final illness. She was enormously respected by her children, extended family, friends, and acquaintances.
One look at the walls and tabletops of her home demonstrated what she considered important: her faith and her family. Throughout her life she also enjoyed her many friends including the Rebels, her National City Golf Club buddies, decades long close friends gained through the Chapel at North Island, long time neighbors, and her special 50+ year friendship with her brother, sis, niece, and nephew Art Sr. and Willie Ann Calvert, Charlotte, and Art Jr..
Clara Anne Brown Walker departed this earthly life on the afternoon of August 26, 2021 at home surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by husband Roddie L. Walker Jr., son Roddie L. Walker III, and daughter-in-law Tracy L. Walker.
Left to cherish her memory are sons Richard Walker, Gregory (Wanda) Walker, daughter Cheryl Walker, daughter-in-law Valerie Walker; ten grandchildren:
Walkers: Rolando (Cheryl), Raelina, Vanessa, Richard Daniel (Ceina), Gregory Jr.;
Turners: Aaron (Ivette), Cameron (Brie)
Michelle (Andy) Leyva, Tricia (Carlos) Canela, & Elizabeth King;
Fourteen great grandchildren: Andrew, Ava Rose, Gabriel, Isabella, Isaiah, Jayden, Jayla, Julia, Kaleia, Kalilah, Moses, Olivia, Tyson, & Zaevion;
sisters Marguerite Carter, Elizabeth (Archie) Taylor, Bobbie (Ernest) Proctor, brother Bailey (Linda) Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Whether she was answering as Mom, Grandma, Grandma Walker, Aunt Clara, Clara Anne, or Clara, all of her family and friends treasured the way she would end her correspondence with
“God loves you and so do I”
