Bertha Marie Klann, 95, passed away on Saturday, May 7 at St. Paul’s Villa assisted living in San Diego, CA. She was born in Basic City, VA on August 5, 1920, the daughter of the late August A. and M. Franziska Klann. She was preceded in death by her brother Paul A. Klann.
She is survived by three nephews, Curtis Klann (Sandy), Philip Klann (Paula) and Malcolm Campbell (Mary) of Waynesboro.
Bertha enjoyed a full life volunteering for many organizations including over 65 years with the Red Cross. March 22nd, 2001 was proclaimed “Bertha Klann Day” for the City of San Diego. She also managed the Cathedral Cafe at St. Joseph’s, was an avid stamp collector and loved photography and travel, having visited over 80 countries. Those who knew Bertha appreciated her wit, always knew her opinion and knew never to leave a light on.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 15 at Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary in San Diego. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph’s Cathedral followed by interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in San Diego.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bertha’s memory to the American Red Cross or St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
