John David Ruf, 82, of Crestline, California, passed away peacefully in bed early morning on October 1st, 2023.
He was born in Los Angeles on September 16th, 1941, to John and Anna Ruf and together with his sister Margie spent their formative years at their beautiful home in Echo Park overlooking the Griffith Observatory. John attended Rim of the World High School before volunteering to join the Army in September 1959 in the Armored division. He was stationed overseas in Germany and was very proud of his time spent running maneuvers in his Abrahams tank through Europe’s narrow streets. Three years later, he returned to his mountain home in Crestline where he continued to work at Goodwin’s Market until retiring after nearly 50 years! He enjoyed spending time traveling with family, friends, loved ones, and loyal four-legged companions. It never mattered much to him what the activity was, whether motorcycling, four wheeling, or just meandering throughout the west coast from Canada to Mexico in his Lazy Dayz. He was truly loved by all who knew him, and his generosity had no bounds.
John D. Ruf was preceded in death by his parents Anna and John Ruf and is survived by his sister Margie Jehue, his son David J. Ruf, and two grandchildren – and his dog Earl who never left his side.
Visitation and Funeral Service is October 19th, 2023 at 10:30 and 11:45 am respectively at Mt. View Mortuary and Cemetery in San Bernardino, CA. The Graveside and Military Honor Service is at Riverside National Cemetery the same day at 1:30 pm where he will be laid to rest.
